The choral music of the Russian Orthodox Church has a history that extends back to the ancient monastic chants of the Byzantine empire, over a thousand years ago.
In Russia, the music of the Orthodox   more...church evolved into some of the purest and most beautiful music ever written for the unaccompanied human voice. The Russian sacred service, sung in the old high Slavonic language and called "The Divine Liturgy," is designed to set the soul soaring beyond earthly cares. The solemn bells, the flickering candles, golden icons, and deep reverberation of the Russian cathedrals create the context; the profound basses, the angelic sopranos, and the exquisite harmonies of the large mixed choruses ? all make this one of the most soul stirring forms of 'sacred spacemusic' in existence.

This extraordinary collection of Orthodox prayers and hymns from guest producer ELLEN HOLMES highlights a timeless Russian tradition of faith and devotion. Featured composers are some of the great all-stars of Russian liturgical music: familiar names like RACHMANINOV and TCHAIKOVSKY, church composers like TURCHANINOV, KEDROV, BORTNIANSKY, and the great Bulgarian composer DOBRI CHRISTOV. INTRO : On this program from 1985, a real deep space journey called BEYOND THE STARGATES. Attention: Spacefans, prepare yourself for some serious traveling.
We'll set the scene with this rare invocation by Japanese spacemusic composer STOMU YAMASHTA. The journey begins with BRIAN ENO's mythic "PROPHECY THEME" and additional music from the soundtrack of the film DUNE. Then, we journey onward with the eerie sounds of an aeolian WIND HARP, and continue with MICHAEL STEARNS' mysterious and powerful music from LYRA: SOUND CONSTELLATION. In the deep spacefields beyond, we'll drift through distant galaxies with music by TIMOTHY WILLIAM HELLEM and BRIAN ENO.

We'll return from our journeys with spacemusic from Germany by the group CLUSTER, once again with BRIAN ENO. A journey BEYOND THE STARGATES...on this 25th Anniversary edition of Hearts of Space.  less

INTRO : 1983...the year before the infamous 1984. It seems lifetimes ago, but that was the year that a syndicated music program called HEARTS of SPACE began to appear on public radio stations around the U.S. And that means that 2008 is the 25th anniversary of the national program.
To celebrate our 25th year, we've selected 25 programs that give an overview of the series and the sound we call ambient, space and contemplative music. We're going to call the series "25 YEARS IN SPACE." We'll start with three retrospective shows this month, and then one a month after that.

Beginnings take on more significance over time, so we'll begin the series with Program Number One, "FIRST FLIGHT." On our premiere program, we featured music by a group of artists who became familiar names in the HEARTS of SPACE pantheon of composers. It's a journey across 25 years of time...and space. For over 4000 years, it's brought the human family a little   more...bit of heaven on earth. From its beginnings in Mesopotamia, it spread across the ancient world to Asia, Egypt, Greece, and Africa. In Medieval times, it was used for sacred and secular music, and to comfort the dying.
As the instrument of the bards and troubadors, it played a key role in the evolution of folk music. In the 19th century, the pedal harp matured into a concert instrument and took its place in the orchestra. And in the 20th century, of course, it went electric — even laser! Whether wirestrung, cross-strung, single, double, or triple strung, pedal or electric, folk or classical — there are harps for every purpose.

BlackWater - a dark ambient journey for Halloween
At the end of October we celebrate Halloween, the lingering expression of the Celtic pagan festival that marked the final extinction of summer. It's a   more...time when the dead were said to revisit the mortal world, and large communal bonfires were lit to ward off the dark spirits. Today it's devolved into a commercial event for the candy industry, with an unusually grim theme — while the fires, at least in California, are a fearsome, destructive presence.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we wander in the gloomy underworlds, ghostly chambers and haunted caverns, on a program called...BLACKWATER.

SEA AND SKY is also the title of the major work on the program, one of the first successful integrations of synthesizers and symphony orchestra... by Japanese composer STOMU YAMASHTA. A fearless experimenter, YAMASHTA has had a unique and varied international career as a percussionist and composer of popular electronic music and scores for film and theater.
