Starting next year, airline passengers will be barred from boarding planes if they refuse to provide their full name and birth date, the Transportation Security Administration has announced. "You have to give this information," Transportation Security Administration chief Kip Hawley warned USA Today. The rule will "dramatically reduce" the number of people hassled at airports because their name resembles a terrorist's on the government watch list, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told USA Today. Comparing a passenger's first, middle and last name and birth date to the watch list will eliminate "most" false matches by more precisely identifying a passenger, Chertoff said. Travelers now must give airlines only a last name and first initial. Airlines must collect the new information starting in July for flights originating or ending in the USA. The requirement also applies to any flight traveling over the country, such as from Canada to Mexico. Security expert Bruce Schneier said it won't improve security because terrorists could buy a ticket using someone else's name.  less

EmploymentCrossing.com A non-profit research and development institute in South Charleston, West Virginia will add 150 new high-tech jobs in the next 18 months, and is receiving $2 million in federal   more...funds to start a Homeland Security data integration center. The Mid-Atlantic Technology, Research and Innovation Center, or MATRIC, will partner with Butler International to form the International Design Center, which will create 150 new engineering and research and development jobs. Butler is a tech outsourcing company headquartered in Florida. "While a lot of people are afraid for their jobs, we are creating jobs," MATRIC CEO Keith Pauley said. The jobs will have an average annual salary of $100,000. Republican Representative Shelley Moore Capito announced $2 million in federal funding to build the Project National Shield Integration Center, which will work to coordinate Homeland Security data. The $2 million was included in the U.S. Department of Defense appropriation approved by Congress.  less
