Think about it...

Thousands of people congregate in large Cathedral-like buildings. They sing their songs and anthems. Banners are unfurled, white flags with red crosses flutter in the breeze. The worship   more...begins as the players run onto the field of play at the start of the match. According to the great Bill Shankly, "Some people think football's a matter of life and death. I can assure them it is much more serious than that". What can be more serious than life and death? Heaven and hell? Football is some religion!... Our place of worship is not a church, nor a mosque, nor a synagogue. The sacred ground spoken of is that blessed turf of the football stadium. The ‘believers’ often meet together before the beginning of a match; they are one entity, sharing one belief. They seek their holy grail – be it The Premier League, FA Cup or promotion from the Conference South. The ‘priest’ takes his seat in the alter-come-dugout as the fans read through the divine scriptures provided (that is if they have not already done so at home). As the righteous heroes take the field hymns are bellowed out at deafening volume. As the followers sit upon their pews in expectance they know the equation is simple, as do the players. Play well, thou shall go to heaven – or at least be praised on the club’s messageboards. Play badly, the fiery depths of hell await you – or you end up being free transferred to Wigan at the end of the season, Titus Bramble, I’m looking at you. Those who make mistakes must offer confessionals and seek forgiveness. It is also apparent that fans need to make their allegiance known. Where Christians wear a crucifix, a Liverpool fan may have a Liver bird tattooed upon his chest. Wherever they go in the world, those who share belief in their team will come together in a united pilgrimage to the promised land – A European cup final. Whether it is to reminisce or to fantasise of a return to greatness, this collective conscience keeps fans faithful.

This long line of similarities does not end here though, oh no, it is not only those who follow religion who have a desire for a second coming in order to show them the way. The second coming is all too common in football. A former hero returns in a hail of glory, the believers flock in a disbelieving manner to see this vision of Robbie Fowler or Gianfranco Zola. Of course there is actually no tangible proof of religion whereas I can certainly confirm that Everton won The FA Cup in 1995 and that David May really does have a Champions League medal. However one thing they do have in common is the need for hope, should they wish to continue their existence. Those who follow Christianity do so because it offers hope in the form of an afterlife. Football fans know that although they suffered a 3-0 humiliation at the hands of their local rivals, there is always next weekend to turn it around, or next season to seek retribution.
