A federal grand jury more...in Los Angeles indicted Lori Drew, 49, on criminal charges of conspiracy and accessing MySpace computers "without authorization to inflict emotional distress on the girl".
"This adult woman used the internet to target an innocent girl with horrendous consequences," Los Angeles US Attorney Thomas O'Brien said during a press conference announcing the indictment on Thursday.
"Any adult who uses the internet or a social networking website to bully another person, particularly a vulnerable teenage girl, should realize this has serious consequences."
Drew was among several adults who pretended to be a 16-year-old boy named "Josh Evans" on MySpace, according to prosecutors. The girl met "Josh" in the online community after she opened her MySpace account in 2006.
"Within days Josh was telling her she was sexy," O'Brien said. "The flirting continued for three weeks."
Josh broke off the virtual relationship and sent the girl a message saying the world would be better off without her, according to prosecutors. Within an hour of receiving the message the girl hanged herself in her bedroom.
Drew and "co-conspirators" used her home computer to chat with the girl on MySpace and gleaned from online exchanges to "torment, harass, humiliate and embarrass" the girl, according to the indictment.
"MySpace does not tolerate cyberbullying and is cooperating fully with the US Attorney in this matter," MySpace said in a written reply to an AFP inquiry.
Drew deleted the "Josh" profile from MySpace after getting word that the girl, a neighbour, hanged herself, according to prosecutors.
"This adult hid behind cyber walls in cyberspace," Los Angeles FBI assistant director Salvador Hernandez said during the press conference.
"Whether the defendant could see the ramifications of this choice she is accountable for what happened. These actions are cruel and unjustified."
Each of the four criminal counts listed in the indictment carries a maximum prison term of five years. In another finding, the study determined that although girls more...tend to cyberbully more often, boys cyberbully as well.
The nonprofit organization, best known for its crime prevention icon, McGruff the Crime Dog, today released a public service announcement called "Chicken," which is specifically targeted to teen boys about preventing cyberbullying. According to NCPC, 43 percent of teens 13-17 years old say they had experienced cyberbullying in 2006 and nine in ten teens (92 percent) reported that they knew the person who was bullying them.
Cyberbullying is defined as using the Internet or mobile devices to send or post repeated harmful or cruel text messages or images. It is a disturbing and growing trend among teens who use the Internet to communicate regularly, and now with a computer, web access (or text messaging device), they can bully their classmates and others in a public forum. less Tags: boys crime mcgruff cyberbullying internet texting multivu 29986 Category: News Views: 29 Comments: 0 Added: Mar 5, 08 By: multivu | | | | | Cyberbullying Talent Show 00:30What is named as the top school trouble of kids 8-15? You see, in the past, bullying mostly happens in the playground where the bully can get physical at you, and that usually happens with the younger kids! This kind of thing happens here too, but we call those bullies, meanies! In fact, this video is inspired by the works of many Internet Companies and their battle against the 99.94% of meanies around the web! So if you want to do something about this issue, tell someone you know that can help you handle that problem. Or if you have a creative mind, do as I did and express yourself to your buddies about how you feel!
Now we come to this video where the AGK takes the role of the big meanie named 'IRockUSuck78349', which is a fake user name! Yes, I'm using fake usernames for the video, so I hope I'm not offending everybody! Yes, some of the comments he makes are mean, but only for storytelling purposes. And just to make sure I don't bore my viewers, I also included two Japanese commercials for Mario Party DS and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles!
