How to use my cumulative recorder program from 1988. It can be downloaded from my web page. The cumulative recorder was invented by B.F. Skinner the in the 1920s. It was a mechanical instrument used for   more...recording behaviour.
One of the advantages of the cumulative recorder is that changes in the rate of responding can be observed as they occur -- in real time. This makes it possible to actually measure the effects consequences have on behaviour.
I made several variations of cumulative recorder programs to run on computers in the middle of the 1980s.
I used it primarily for analysis of video recordings of different types of behaviour.
It can also be used as an event recorder.
For example I used a variation of this program that ran for a week and automatically recorded automobile traffic on a private road on my property.
My recorder can record and draw curves, for two different responses simultaneously. It is also possible to add an annotation or mark to each of the curves while recording. This mark could indicate some important change in the situation for example that reinforces no longer are presented after a behaviour etc.

In 1996 I added to the program the ability to save the recording as a PCX graphic file.
Apparently quite a few people are using this rather antique program throughout the world.

The program can be downloaded from my home page. It is a zip file so you will need to unzip and save the file somewhere. The file is named CUMVGA4 with the file extension .EXE.

To avoid problems with modern computers you should run this program in compatibility modus for Windows 95. This is done by right clicking on the file and choosing properties.

After running the program you set the length of the recording, and then the Y axis increment.

Responses on the black curve are made by pressing the "s" key and on the red curve by the "x" or " " key. Pressing "f" puts a black marker on the black curve; "m" puts a red marker on the red curve.
You can later add descriptive text to these marks in a graphic editing program.
Pause is toggled on and of by pressing "p".
While the program is paused it is possible to save the image as a pcx file. The PCX files are automatically saved with the CUM extension instead of the PCX extension.
After you save the file you must change the extension from .CUM to .PCX. You can also give it a longer name. The PCX files must then be converted to modern BMP files. I use the free program Irfan View for doing this.  less
