The most recent attempt to systematically review the epidemiologic evidence for increased risk of brain tumors related to cell phone use indicates that repercussions from this global experiment are coming to light. In a meta-analysis published in the May 2008 issue of the International Journal of Oncology, Swedish researchers found significant associations between long-term cell phone use and brain tumor risk. In July 2008 market research firm MultiMedia Intelligence reported that more than 16 million U.S. teens use cell phones.

"We found that cell phone use is linked to gliomas [malignant brain tumors] and acoustic neuromas [benign tumors of the brain's auditory nerve] and are showing up after only ten years," says lead author Lennart Hardell, an oncologist and cancer epidemiologist at University Hospital in Örebro, Sweden. Specifically, for studies that included at least 10 years of exposure, there was a doubling in the risk of gliomas for ipsilateral (same-side) but not contralateral (opposite-side) exposures to the head (as reflected by which hand the subject typically used to hold his/her cell phone). A 2.4-fold increase in risk was seen for acoustic neuromas due to ipsilateral exposures, whereas no increased risk occurred for meningiomas (tumors that occur in the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord).

The Federal Trade Commission   more...has reached a settlement with Comstar Communications, Inc. and its president, Randall A. Carasco, who marketed and sold "WaveShield," "WaveShield 1000," and "WaveShield 2000" -- so-called cell phone "radiation protection patches."
Using television, radio, and Internet advertising, the defendants allegedly claimed that their products could block up to 99 percent of radiation and other electromagnetic energy emitted by cellular telephones, thereby reducing consumers' exposure to this radiation. In February 2002, the FTC issued a complaint against the West Sacramento, California-based defendants alleging that the claims were false and unsubstantiated.
The order prohibits the defendants from the future marketing or selling of any product that claims to reduce consumers' exposure to radiation and electromagnetic energy, unless the claims are true and can be substantiated by competent and reliable scientific evidence. The order also prohibits the defendants from making unsubstantiated representations about the benefits, performance, or efficacy of any product or service.
The settlement requires the defendants to clearly disclose that most electromagnetic energy emitted by cell phones comes from parts of the phone other than the earpiece, where the WaveShield is placed, and that the WaveShield has no significant effect on this other radiation.
Additionally, the settlement prohibits the defendants from misrepresenting the results of any test, study, or research.

Here's another study   more...linking cell phones to brain cancer. In a recent issue
of the peer-reviewed journal Occupational Environmental Medicine
a link was shown between cell phone use and brain cancer. Here are some of
the findings:

1. Using a cell phone for more than 10 years increases the risk of
getting brain cancer.
2. People using a cell phone for 10 years or more are twice as
likely to develop a tumor on the same side of the head where the
handset is used most often.
3. Using a cell phone just one hour a day over a 10-year period is
enough to increase the risk of brain cancer
4. Children should not use a cell phone at all
5. International standards to protects users from radiation are "not
safe" and need to be revised.
6. Subjects using cell phones for 10 years or more were 20% more
likely to develop acoustic neuroma (a benign tumor of the auditory
nerve).
7. Subjects using cell phones for 10 years or more were 30% more
likely to develop malignant gliomas.

Clearly, once again, these findings present compelling information
linking cell phone use to brain cancer.

Don't take the use of wireless technology lightly. It is a very real
and relevant danger. Protect yourself and your family and don't let
your kids use a cell phone unless it's an emergency.

A CONTROVERSIAL plan   more...for a phone mast is back on the table - but is now set to be bigger.

Vodafone withdrew original proposals for an 11ft pole with three antennas back in October 2006 after complaints from residents.

But now the mobile phone company has submitted new plans for a 12ft pole with SIX antennas just 100 metres from elderly residents' homes.

The plans would see the mast placed on the green area in front of the Methodist Church on the corner of Ludwick Way and Cole Green Lane in WGC.

Residents and shopkeepers are already gathering signatures against the plans.

Speaking to the WHT, the Rev John Churcher said he was just as concerned two years on.

In a letter to Welwyn Hatfield Council, which will decide on the planning application, he said: "Why is it necessary for Vodafone to install these six antennas right in the centre of a residential area, with children constantly passing on their way to local shops and schools?

"With a number of elderly people living within 100 metres of the proposed antennas, who are suffering from and being treated for cancer, why add to their anxiety by placing antennas that transmit low level radiation so close to their homes?"

Cole Green House resident Del Walker, whose living room looks out on to the green, was also against the plans.

The 73-year-old said: "We have three golf courses in the town with more than enough room for them.

"Why can't it go in the industrial estates or in the council office's car park?

"It's so intrusive."

No-one at Vodafone was available for comment at time of writing.

The cell phone only had to be used two or three times a day during the pregnancy so it wasn't as if these moms were spending hours and hours on their cell phones. Translation: it didn't take much "exposure" in the way of proximity to cause this.And get this. Among those children who had also used a cell phone by age 7 the incidence of behavior problems was 80% higher!Researchers were completely surprised and have no explanation for the findings at this point. It isn't a proximity issue for the fetus since the majority of mothers carried their cell phones in a bag or purse during their pregnancy and not on their bodies. So it apparently has nothing to do with how close the phone was to the body.The study also showed these children were 25% more at risk for emotional problems, 34% more likely to have difficulties relating to their peers, 35% more likely to be hyperactive, and 49% more likely to have conduct problems. It's also worth noting in this study that 30% of Danish seven-year olds were already using a cell phone! That's right! 30%!
