Stuttgart, Germany, June 2009: The best and brightest automotive minds of the 21st Century convened at the 21st International Technical Conference on the Enhanced Safety of Vehicles (ESV) to present the   more...latest and most innovative technologies for automotive safety.

The largest and most important global congress on vehicle safety attracted approximately 800 participants including engineers, designers, and executives from 24 countries on all five continents.

Among the highlights of the ESV was the Mercedes-Benz unveiling of the ESF 2009 an experimental safety vehicle with trailblazing innovations including: inflatable metallic sections to afford more stability to structural components within fractions of a second, and a Braking Bag housed within the vehicle floor and more.




The ESF 2009, based on the Mercedes S 400 HYBRID, is the first Experimental Safety Vehicle to be built by Mercedes-Benz since 1974.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009: An estimated 150 cities across America participated in World Olympic Day 2009 - a celebration for youth worldwide to observe the birth of the Modern Olympics games and the Olympic   more...values of Fair-play, Perseverance, Respect, and Sportsmanship.

A wide array of Olympic style events took place around the United States featuring former and current Olympic athletes, young people, local citizens of all ages, Olympic hopefuls, city officials, and amateur athletes to name a few.

Mayors countrywide proclaimed Tuesday as Olympic Day in their respective locales. The U.S.O.C. (United States Olympic Committee) celebrates Olympic Day annually with events at the U.S. Olympic Training Centers and official training sites, as well as coordinating activities with sport National Governing Bodies and affiliated multi-sport organizations.

August 2009: Berlin, Germany: The world is going soft.

The 2009 International Symposium of Cultural Diplomacy, hosted by the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy (ICD), brought together a diverse group of   more...participants from around the world for a week long series of lectures, panel discussions, and social events to explore the role of soft power in contemporary international relations.

Soft power, as the term implies, refers to the practice of gaining co-operation by means of attraction as opposed to coercion, or payment. This years themes encompassed the use of art and culture as vehicles of national foreign policy and the influence of the private sector in the generation and application of soft power.

Among the former presidents participating in the Symposium included:

• Jorge Sampaio Former President of Portugal, UN Representative
• Joaquim Chissano Former President of Mozambique and Former Chair of African Union
• Dr. Varia Vike-Freiberga Former President of Latvia
• Cassam Uteem Former President of Republic of Mauritus

This year, five related themes were the center of attention with regard to the implementation of soft power.

The approaches of states and international organizations to soft power and the role it plays in their policy making.

The importance of multi-lateral of multi-lateral understanding to cooperation on global challenges.

The role of cultural diplomacy in relations between the Western world and the Middle East.

The challenges and opportunities of using art and culture as vehicles of national foreign policy.

The influence of the private sector in the generation and application of soft power.

The founder and director of the ICD is Mark Donfried, currently a visiting professor at Humbolt University in Berlin. Among his seminars for undergraduates includes Searching for a Cultural Diplomacy. He is focusing his current research and publishing in the field of civil society based cultural diplomacy.

With Americas attention now focused on environmental responsibility and economic viability, some of the entertainment worlds most recognizable stars   more...are showing their support for Earth Day and beyond by opting to drive automobiles which leave no carbon footprints, polluting emissions, or wasteful energy.

Gas guzzling limousines were noticeably replaced by Chevy Equinox Fuel Cell Hydrogen SUVs a vehicle that only emits water vapors as seen at the recent Disneys premier of Earth in Los Angeles.

The vehicles for the premier are part of Chevys Project Driveway a program wherein celebrities and average citizens alike are test driving fuel cell cars. More than 100 fuel cell vehicles in real-world driving conditions are on the road in such locales New York City, Washington DC, and Southern California. Drivers are providing GM engineers and scientists valuable feedback not unlike a film or concert review to determine the next steps in the development of the truly green vehicles. Project Driveway is largest endeavor ever to put fuel cell vehicles on real roads.

Monday, April 6, 2009: The thirteen members of the International Olympic Committees Evaluation Commission were treated to an exclusive four-course dinner at the famed Chicago Art Institute highlighting   more...their 6day visit to the Windy City.

The 120 guests were entertained by Chicago greats Koko Taylor and Buddy Guy, Andrew Bird, and the Chicago Children's Choir. The evening started off with video messages from US president Barack Obama and basketball Michael Jordan before meeting and hearing from one of the worlds most influential humanitarian and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey.

Talk that Oprah would openly support Chicago's bid began in earnest after she featured U.S. Olympians in her season's first show last September from Millennium Park. Winfrey's daily program noted at the time that the show was a way to showcase Chicago as it bid for the 2016 Summer Games.

Corporate leaders like Boeing Company chief executive James McNerney talked about why the company moved its headquarters to Chicago form Seattle, while Abbott Laboratories chief executive Miles White were among corporate leaders from traditional Olympics sponsors Anheuser-Busch, United Airlines and McDonald's attended the Art Institute dinner in the new wing set to open to the public next month.

White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett told the International Olympic Committee members this morning (Monday) that President Obama has asked her to become the White House Olympic liaison should Chicago be selected as the 2016 host city, making Jarrett the highest level administration official ever to be named point person for the Games.

Jarrett was one of the founding board members of Chicago 2016 and told the IOC members they will receive unprecedented level of cooperation from the White House. Concerns over immigration issues, security funding and other federal assistance will all "personally" be handled by her.

According to the Chicago 2016 venue plan, 72 percent of the sports will be located in facilities that are largely completed. The location of the Olympic Village puts 90 percent of the athletes within 15 minutes of their competition venues. Situated on the lakefront, the Village is a short distance away from the Olympic live sites, celebration centers and the heart of Chicagos downtown area.

The city of Chicago has opened its arms to members of the International Olympic Committees (IOC) Evaluation Commission in an effort to win the honor of becoming the official host city for the 2016 Summer Games. The IOC evaluation delegates have been reviewing detailed written, video and oral presentations from the Chicago 2016 staff.

The final decision as to which city will host the 2016 Olympics will be made by secret ballot of one hundred and fifteen (115) voting IOC members in October 2009. Chicago is competing against Rio de Janeiro, Madrid, and Tokyo.

According to the Chicago 2016 venue plan, 72 percent of the sports will be located in facilities that are largely completed. The location of the Olympic Village puts 90 percent of the athletes within 15 minutes of their competition venues. Formula 1 championship leader Jenson Button joined Mercedes-Benz in Goodwood, England at the Festival of Speed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Mercedes legendary Silver Arrows. Sir Stirling Moss   more...explained the basics of the silver racer to the 29 year-old Formula 1 point leader.

For the very first time, Jenson was behind the wheel of the 1934 race car that Manfred von Brauchitsch drove that year at the International Eifel race at the Nürburgring track in Germany.

As the story goes, technicians from Mercedes-Benz stripped the white paint off its grand prix cars at the 1934 International Eifel race at the Nürburgring track in Germany to bring the cars below the maximum weight permitted by the new racing formula of the time, 750 kilograms, or 1,650pounds.

Manfred von Brauchitsch delivered a win in the debut of the W 25 race car at the Nürburgring.

For Jenson Button, too, next weekend's race at the German race track might very well be decisive for his lead in Formula One.

The Festival of Speed in Goodwood, England is the automotive event in the UK and attracted more than 150,000 people from Friday 3 July through Sunday 5 July. Among the many highlights at the 2009 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the worlds largest and most diverse celebration of the history of motor sport and car culture, was a tribute to 75 Years of Silver Arrows.

Mercedes-Benz presented its Silver Arrows racing cars from 1934-39 and 1954-55. These standard setting race cars scored top results in numerous international races in their respective eras. The series of triumphs began with the W 25 (1934-36) and the W 125 (1937) for the 750-kilogram formula, followed by the W 154 complying with the three-litre formula in 1938/39, and the W 165 for the one-and-a-half-litre race in Tripoli in May 1939. The modern (post-war) period is represented by the W 196 R Grand Prix car from July 1954.
