It's okay to laugh at the beginning as long as you appreciate the heartwarming ending.

The Children's Home the state put me in when I was 13. The year was 1977. I lived there until the day before I was 19. They helped kids considered abused, neglected, emotionally disturbed and mentally   more...handicapped.
The state I lived in decided that as an autistic person who was also believed to be mentally retarded and with the particulars of my home life that I qualified as 'all of the above' for placement there. However the children's home had only converted from an orphanage a year and a half before and autistics were still pretty rare (as were places to treat them. This was the only place like it for a 300 mile radius). They had never had an autistic kid and had never seen anything like me before. I was the only one even remotely like me the whole time I was there. While I was a kid I didn't realize it at the time, but being placed there was the best thing that could have happened to me.
Years later I found out that when they took me away my dad got in his car and drove around listening to my Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band tape and when it got to this song he had to pull the car over and stop because he was crying.
That's me in the red shirt at my uncle's house (one of the places where I was a foster kid before being placed at the children's home), that's me in the pamphlet with the blocks and my counselor guy, and me in the yellow shirt with barrettes in the pictures smiling and hugging a boy and then one of my dorm-mates.  less
