Critics have said the firings were politically motivated. The 392-page report released on Monday was blistering in its assessment. “The report makes plain that, at a minimum, the process by which nine U.S. attorneys were removed in 2006 was haphazard, arbitrary and unprofessional, and the way in which the Justice Department handled those removals and the resulting public controversy was profoundly lacking,” Mr. Mukasey said in a statement. The report called for further investigation to determine whether prosecutable offenses were committed either in the firings or in subsequent testimony about them. The report found that primary blame for the “serious failures” in the firing process lay with Attorney General Gonzalez and his deputy, Paul McNulty, “who abdicated their responsibility to adequately oversee the process and ensure that the reasons for removal of each U.S. Attorney were supportable and not improper.” The White House has refused to provide documents related to the firings. Settlement money may be used for attorneys' fees, consumer protection enforcement or education. The states alleged that although significant safety concerns led the FDA to reject a request to market high-dose Bextra for acute and surgical pain, Pfizer conducted an aggressive campaign to market the drug for unapproved purposes. The company provided prizes to encourage sales representatives to promote Bextra for off-label uses; bribed influential doctors with paid consultancies and lavish weekends at high-end resorts; and promoted Bextra for off-label uses during educational programs attended by physicians. I'd be more worried about Osama blowing us up than pirates trying to sell knockoff DVDs at flea markets. This new law could SERIOUSLY hamper creativity and take away Fair Use for AMV makers, who DO purchase the games from which they use footage for AMVs and Songvids.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has laid off 19 employees in the face of budget cuts ordered by the Governor. The layoffs came last week and early this week. A dozen   more...lawyers and three others were let go in Chicago. Springfield lost one non- lawyer and 3 attorneys.

Madigan’s office is also planning on implementing unpaid days off on all employees, though the details have not been worked out. There will be little to no job offers coming from the Attorney Generals office and time for a hiring freeze is quickly approaching.

By year’s end, 325 employees are expected to be laid off from the Department of Children and Family Services, the Department of Health Services, the Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. Last month, the state Treasurer let six employees go.  less
