University President   more...Joseph White wants to turn the school's Global Campus into an independent, accredited university to speed up development of degree programs. So far only 121 students have enrolled, in just five degree programs — far short of the 9,000 students White predicted for the first five years. When the program began in January, White hoped his professors would quickly create online programs in business, engineering and other high-demand fields. But “that has not happened," White told The Associated Press White plans to ask the university's board of trustees to let the Global Campus seek its own accreditation, giving it the same standing and independence as the university's three brick-and-mortar campuses. White has estimated a fully developed virtual campus would generate $10 million a year for the university system, by providing affordable access to higher education for people who can't easily take classes at a U of I campus. Other online learning initiatives created by accredited schools have had success. The University of Massachusetts’ online program has 33,900 enrollments and revenue of $37 million.  less

"We made the decision some months ago that the economy was going to be a bit wobbly so we began a belt-tightening," Stern said in London, where the New Jersey Nets beat the Miami Heat in a preseason game. Stern emphasized that the league is still hitting its business targets. The NBA continues to hire in other countries as it grows internationally.  less

MillerCoors LLC said Wednesday it has signed a 15-year lease for office space in its new headquarters of Chicago, according to the Associated Press. The company - a joint venture of SABMiller's U.S. unit   more...and Molson Coors Brewing Co. - said it will take over approximately 130,000 square feet of the building in June 2009. In an effort to save on costs, about 400 employees will work there - including senior executives, as well as employees in marketing, human resources, legal, finance and other divisions. Many of the employees will be shifted from SABMiller's U.S. headquarters in Milwaukee and Molson Coors' headquarters in Golden, Colo. About 150 will be coming from each city, spokesman Julian Green said. MillerCoors Chief Executive Leo Kiely said in a statement MillerCoors will also maintain "significant operations" in both those cities, and plans to make major investments in those breweries and stay connected to the communities. The parents of a 23-year-old rugby player who committed suicide after a training accident left him paralyzed say the decision gave him "welcome relief." Daniel James died in a Swiss clinic on   more...Sept. 12, according to a local authority in central England. But the Worcestershire Coroner Service does not say how James — who was paralyzed from the chest down — got to Switzerland. British law bars anyone from cooperating with a suicide attempt. Local police say they are investigating. Assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland under some circumstances and various organizations there provide suicide services. The Bush administration invited executives from leading financial firms to a meeting Monday to work out details of the $700 billion plan aimed at thawing frozen bank lending that   more...is stifling the economy, according to the Associated Press.

Officials from the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve will meet bankers at the Treasury Department. The discussions are aimed at finalizing details on a financial market stability plan.

The administration plans to implement the rescue package that Congress passed on October 3rd. The government may take partial ownership in banks and purchase bad debt from financial companies.

President Bush said the plan will help banks gain access to capital and unfreeze credit markets.

"These are tough times for our economies yet we can be confident that we can work our way through these challenges and America will continue to work closely with the other nations to coordinate our response to this global financial crisis," Bush told Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi.

The discussions in Washington came as Europe took swift, unified action to thaw frozen lending and get the global economy moving again.  less
