From the last weekend in February until the middle of April, the maple sap is running. There are quite a few sugar bushes in Ontario and Quebec which have activities and events which draw plenty of visitors.

Today, Mom and I visited the Proulx Farms in Osgoode, just east of Ottawa. Most of the big farms provide year-round activities which augment their businesses, including berry-picking, parties, Autumn and Hallowe'en hay rides and "haunted walks", and, of course, maple syrup visits. Most offer a hearty brunch (all day) featuring pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage and ham, pork crisp, baked beans, and pea soup.

The food today was good, with the exception of the home fries (fried potato chunks) and the coffee (which the first time around you could have dissolved paint with and the second was barely coloured) tasted remarkably medicinal... However, fresh maple syrup, pancakes, eggs, and the rest MORE than made up for the coffee.

Needless to say, the crowning glory was the maple taffy!!!!

Be prepared for long waits in line-ups for the food on weekends. We waited for over an hour. However, you get chatting with others in line and you make the best of it.

You'll notice lots of accents in the crowd, as well as a few languages other than English.  less
