Liverpool win their 1st Premiership match of 2008

Fernando Torres' superb individual goal and a Steven Gerrard penalty pushed Liverpool up to fourth as Fulham again imploded in the last 10 minutes.

Torres twisted and turned to get the better of Aaron   more...Hughes, before beating goalkeeper Antti Niemi with a low shot.

Peter Crouch, who hit the bar with a first-half header, won the penalty when he was fouled by Carlos Bocanegra and Gerrard's spot-kick was unstoppable.

Niemi was superb for Fulham in goal, making a series of top-class saves.  less

Fernando Torres capped a fine display with a hat-trick as Liverpool dumped Reading out of the Carling Cup.

Yossi Benayoun fired Liverpool ahead, but Bobby Convey volleyed an equaliser from Nicky Shorey's   more...corner.

Torres raced clear to score but again Reading hit back when another Shorey corner was prodded in by John Halls.

But Torres made sure of their place in the fourth round when he slammed home from a John Arne Riise square ball and then ran clear before slotting home.  less

Milton Torres (Ret. USAF Maj.) is finally speaking about his UFO encounter. The British Ministry of Defense declassified his file in October, 2008.
Milton Torres, a United States Air Force pilot who stated that on 20th May 1957 he was ordered to open fire on a UFO that was being tracked on radar. He was based at RAF Manston in Kent and was scrambled to intercept a UFO that had been tracked over Kent. He claims that he came within seconds of firing off a salvo of 24 rockets when the UFO accelerated away at a speed of around Mach 10. Torres stated that he was subsequently warned to stay silent about the incident and only mentioned it years afterwards, at a reunion. While Torres has gone on the record and given a number of media interviews, following the release of the documents from the MoD files, most people have not realised that the account in the MoD file is not an official USAF or MoD witness statement. It is a transcript of an interview with Torres, undertaken years after the event and forwarded to MoD by a ufologist. The ufologist then speculated that the incident was part of some secret test, which is patently false, as such tests would be conducted in the restricted airspace of various ranges over the sea. Needless to say, one does not conduct tests involving the potential firing of live weapons over the mainland UK! Torres is clearly an honourable man, recalling a difficult and potentially life threatening mission. But I would suggest that ufologists need to track down the original 1957 paperwork if they are to get to the bottom of this incident. Torres is not the only pilot to have been ordered to open fire on UFOs. Liverpool endured a frustrating afternoon as they were held to a goalless draw by Fulham at Anfield.

The best chance of an even first-half fell to Robbie Keane, but the Republic of Ireland striker shot   more...straight at keeper Mark Schwarzer from eight yards.

Fulham were not just content to soak up pressure and Andrew Johnson and Jimmy Bullard both tested Pepe Reina.

Liverpool dominated the second half but failed to capitalise and remain second behind Chelsea in the table.

If Rafael Benitez's side harbour serious ambitions of challenging for the Premier League title this season, however, then they will need to perform better than they did against the Cottagers.

Before Saturday's encounter the visitors had collected just one point on their travels but they turned in a disciplined and confident performance and for the first half at least, looked capable of adding three more to that total.  less

Robbie Keane scored his first Premier League goals for Liverpool as they beat West Brom to go three points clear of Chelsea at the top of the table.

A combination of Scott Carson's body and Jonas Olsson's   more...arm prevented Yossi Benayoun's shot opening the scoring.

But there was no stopping Keane when he latched on to Steven Gerrard's pass before clipping the ball over Carson.

Keane scored his second goal when he rounded Carson and slotted home before Alvaro Arbeloa curled in a late third.

Keane will be delighted to get off the mark in the league, following his £20m summer move from Tottenham.

And the Republic of Ireland international took his goals well as Liverpool made sure there would be no repeat of the collapse that saw them lose a lead and fall to defeat at Spurs a week ago.

It helped that this time they were up against a team in West Brom who have not won at Anfield for 41 years.

Once Liverpool went ahead, it never looked as though the visitors would bring an end to that poor run.  less

Fernando Torres struck twice in three minutes as Liverpool comfortably eased past Everton in the Merseyside derby.

Torres slid home Robbie Keane's cross after 59 minutes then pounced on a loose ball to   more...score from close range after Phil Jagielka tackled Dirk Kuyt.

Tim Cahill had Everton's best chance after 13 minutes but mis-kicked from Mikel Arteta's corner.

Liverpool were left lamenting a second-minute disallowed goal after they were held to a goalless draw at home by newly promoted Stoke.

Stoke continued to frustrate the home side as Thomas Sorensen saved Robbie Keane's 51st-minute strike.

And Andy Griffin's late goal-line clearance ensured the match was drawn.

After the heights of a 2-1 victory over rivals Manchester United last week, Liverpool will consider the solitary point a setback for their title ambitions, although they briefly took top spot in the Premier League before they were deposed by Arsenal.  less

Liverpool and Aston Villa played out a cagey goalless draw at Villa Park.

John Carew was denied by the feet of Pepe Reina, while David Ngog shot just over the bar after being set up by Robbie Keane in   more...a dour first half.

Keane was put clean through by Javier Mascherano after the break but scuffed his shot wide when in front of goal.

Substitute James Milner had a late chance to wrap up all three points on his return to the club, but Reds keeper Pepe Reina saved comfortably.

With Chelsea held by Tottenham, Liverpool had the chance to go top of the league on a ground where they have enjoyed plenty of success over the years.  less

TORRES ON TARGET IN REDS' ROMP


Liverpool extended their unbeaten run in pre-season to seven matches as they eased to a comfortable victory over Valerenga in Oslo.

Superb goals from Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres, Yossi Benayoun and David Ngog secured a 4-1 win for the Reds as Rafael Benitez' side stepped up a gear in their preparations for next week's Champions League qualifier in Belgium.

Ahead of the match, a buoyant crowd packed into the stadium to see Liverpool in action, but it was the hosts who made the more assured start to the proceedings and after a cagey opening 10 minutes it looked like the Reds could be in for a tough evening.

However, it was Rafael Benitez's side that made the first chance of any note when Fernando Torres fizzed a low drive just wide of the near post.

It set the tone for the remainder of the half and just seconds later Xabi Alonso flashed a 25-yard effort just over the crossbar after Dirk Kuyt's cross from the right had only been half-cleared by the Norwegian outfit.

It seemed only a matter of time before Liverpool would strike the opening goal of the match and after Steven Gerrard had smashed a 30-yard shot well over the bar, they duly obliged courtesy of an exquisite finish from Alonso.

A neat build-up down the right ended with Robbie Keane, who touched the ball back for the Euro 2008 winner to curl the ball beyond the despairing dive of Perkins and into the far corner of the net.

It was the Spaniard's second goal of the pre-season and followed on from his superbly executed spot-kick in the 4-0 win over Rangers four days earlier.

It was all plain-sailing for the visitors and not even the blow of losing skipper Steven Gerrard through what looked like a recurrence of a groin strain on 28 minutes could stop them from dominating the remainder of the half.

Robbie Keane went close to opening his account for his new club with an 18-yard shot that arrowed just wide of target while Jamaican defender Adrian Reid - who was making his Valerenga debut - was left to breath a huge sigh of relief when he saw his awkward defensive header crash back off his own post.

The Norwegians had been almost non-existent as an attacking force in the opening 45 minutes and so it came as a huge surprise to those packed inside the Ullevaal Stadion when they drew level within two minutes of the restart.

A flowing one-touch move down the right opened up the Liverpool defence allowing Bojan Zajic to coolly dispatch the ball beyond substitute keeper Pepe Reina and spark huge celebrations amongst his Valerenga teammates.

The home support began to dream of a shock Valerenga victory but the goal only served to shake the Reds into action and within 60 seconds normal service had been resumed courtesy of another virtuoso strike from Fernando Torres.

The Spanish hot-shot latched onto Dirk Kuyt's intelligent header before surging beyond Reid and nonchalantly slotting the ball past another substitute keeper, Bolthof, to put Liverpool 2-1 ahead.

From that moment on the pattern of play began to resemble that of the first period and Keane was once again cursing his luck less than a minute later when he dragged a low effort just wide after he was played through on the left side of the penalty area.

It was a frustrating night for the Irishman who is still to open his account for his new club although he did at times show glimpses of the quality he will offer Rafael Benitez's side.

Keane, who cost Liverpool £20million when he moved from Tottenham last week, linked well with the Spaniard in a first half which Liverpool bossed for long spells.

Torres gave the visitors the interval lead from close range after Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor had fumbled a long-range drive from French youngster Damien Plessis.

After both sides made five substitutions each at half-time, with Torres staying inside, 19-year-old striker David Ngog struck from the edge of the box for his first goal since signing from Paris St Germain before Yossi Benayoun made it three at the far post on the hour.  less
