She was constructed in 1863 at the Ramsey Shipyard more...on the Isle of Man. Iron ships were rare then, with most vessels still being wood. The ship began her sailing life with two near disastrous voyages to India. On her first trip she suffered a collision AND a mutiny. On her SECOND trip, a cyclone hit her in the Bay of Bengal, and with her topmasts blown away, she barely made port.
In 1871 she began a quarter century of work transporting emigrants from England who wanted to settle in New Zealand. The ship made 21 trips around the world during this time, some trips lasting up to a year.
The NEXT stage in her career began in 1902, when she began sailing back and forth between California and the Bering Sea, transporting fishermen and cannery workers on the northern journey, and transporting canned salmon back to California.
San Diegans paid $9,000 for the Star of India in 1926, but, since steam ships now ruled the seas, the once proud ship sat deteriorating for decades, but was finally refurbished and restored, and in 1976 sailed for the first time in fifty years, as over half a million onlookers watched. The ship is now sailed at least once a year and maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers and skilled craftsmen.
The song is Enya’s “Orinoco Flow”. The soaring full orchestra sound and “sail away” lyrics seem to go really well with video clips of this wonderful tall masted ship.
(The above historical information was obtained from printed material from the Maritime Museum. Here’s the website for the museum: http://www.sdmaritime.com There are several vessels that make up the museum, all of which are very interesting (including the Russian submarine I did a video about), so the place is well worth a visit if you like this type of thing. WINTER’S day yesterday here in San Diego (it’s always hard to remember it’s winter with this great weather we almost always have here LOL), so I went over more...to the Maritime Museum of San Diego, and wandered around inside the 300 foot long “B-39”, which is a Russian, Soviet era “Foxtrot” class (its NATO designation) or “Project 641” (Soviet Navy designation) diesel-electric powered attack submarine. She was constructed at the Sudomekh shipyards near Leningrad and commissioned in 1974. The irony is that the B-39 almost certainly spent part of her career stalking many of the of the U.S. Navy ships that are now her neighbors on San Diego Bay! (the above info is taken from the Maritime Museum brochure).
The two songs for this video are “Yellow Submarine” by The Beatles, and, AND, since I have a REALLY droll, dry, warped sense of humor, I also used a bizarre song (more of a “surreal, story telling narrative”) called “The Submarine”, by 2NU, which is a group out of Seattle, Washington. The eeriness of the song seems to go really well with the eerie, solitary journey thru’ the pipe and wiring filled “intestines”, within the confines of the belly of the sub. (I’m over 6 feet tall, so it was quite a stunt to continue filming while squeezin’ thru’ the small openings inside the sub!! . . . luckily I do a lot of Yoga, so I'm USED to bendin' my body into the shape of a PRETZEL!! The “Berkeley” is an 1898 steam ferry that operated for 60 years on San Francisco Bay, and I vividly remember riding more...on this ferry boat when I was a little kid growing up in the San Francisco area, so it was great to learn that the Berkeley still survives this half century later, and can now live out her life being visited by people who never got to experience a journey on such boats :) (For that matter, it’s great to learn that I’M still around this half century later! LOL) The funny thing is that, as a little kid, the seating benches looked HUGE, so when walking around the boat now as a 6’-1” tall baby boomer, the benches NOW look really SMALL!
The San Diego Maritime Museum has an interesting historical tidbit about the Berkeley. Since the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges didn’t yet exist across San Francisco Bay in 1906, during the massive earthquake and subsequent fire of that year, the Berkeley carried thousands of survivors to safety. Her captain and crew, not even knowing the fate of their OWN families, worked night and day to help victims escape the burning shores of San Francisco.

When we lived there in 2003, it was the year of "la more...canicule" - the hottest summer ever in France.
Lyrics:
In the summer all the streets here are deserted. You can't find the Parisians or their pets. It's easier to avoid the poodle droppings As you walk that extra block for your baguettes.
The outbound roads are chock-a-block with traffic As the city-dwellers bid the town goodbye And they head towards the coast for their vacations, Where the hotel prices reach towards the sky.
But in the city, It's very pretty. They've made a beach along the river Seine, With children playing in the sand And lovers walking hand-in-hand. Oh, let's go down to Paris Plage again.
You can make an Eiffel Tower out of sand. You can picnic and there's lots of games to play. There are ice-cream stalls that only charge you double, And toilets where you never have to pay.
It's such a pity To leave the city. You can lie in deck-chairs soaking up the sun. Get a tan while you have the chance And in the evening you can dance To African drumbeats when the day is done.
In the city streets you'll only see the tourists Queuing for the Louvre and Notre Dame. The restaurateurs have all gone on vacation But you can't close down that old Parisian charm.
Yes, in the city It's very pretty. They've made a beach along the river Seine. The mayor of Paris had a dream And brought about this bold new scheme, So let's go down to Paris Plage again.
Let's go again Down to the Seine And join the bodies lying in the sun. No matter if you're fat or slim, Even though you can't go for a swim, At Paris Plage you'll have a lot of fun.
With the hospitals and nursing homes short-handed It's the hottest summer France has ever known. Eleven thousand old folks never made it, When their families went and left them all alone.
But in the city, It's very pretty. They've made a beach along the river Seine, With children playing in the sand And lovers walking hand-in-hand. Oh, let's go down to Paris Plage again.
