Children's author Robert Munsch wrote this poem for my son.
After his second liver transplant, David began calling his scar his "shark bite".
One day we were at the beach when a shark was spotted   more...in the water. People were being told to get out of the water and things got a bit crazy. My son David, dressed in just his swimming shorts, was running back and forth yelling at the top of his lungs, "I think that's the shark that bit me!!!" People noticed the huge scar across David's tummy and began to stare in amazement. It really did look as if David had been attacked by a shark.
In 2003 my friend related this story to Mr. Munsch and he penned this little poem for David.

"David"
In the hospital
In the dark,
I got bit
By a hospital shark.
They swim the hallways
Late at night
Looking for kids
That taste just right.
But I was lucky
Cause, you see,
The shark didn't like
The taste of me.
He took one bite
And swam away
And that's why I'm
Alive today.  less

The lyrics tell a vague story about a man looking for a girl in a forest. He hears her calling for him, and as he chases her, he suddenly stops and realizes that he is lost and that the girl is not there.   more...The song is fairly upbeat compared to the other material on the album, and Lol Tolhurst's machine-like steady beat together with Simon Gallup's minimalistic bassline gives this nervous chase more depth and keeps the song on the edge of a frantic groove until the end.

Though not their biggest hit, it is regarded by many fans and critics as the best example of The Cure's sound. The song is also notable for securing the band its first slot on BBC's "Top of the Pops". Today, this song is a concert favourite, known to be stretched out of proportions. In fact, there are versions that have lasted up to 20 minutes.  less

on Robert F. Kennedy's Statement in Indianapolis, IN on Martin Luther
King's Assassination, which he made on the night of   more...April 4, 1968.

Amid the tragedy of the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, an
extraordinary moment in U.S. political history occurred as
Robert F. Kennedy, younger brother of slain President John F. Kennedy,
broke the news of King's death to a large gathering of African Americans
in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Most of the people hadn't even heard that Dr. King had been shot. I can
imagine that they were stunned and some cried. But that evening
Robert Kennedy spoke from his soul. The words rang in almost a
prayerful manner.

Carved on the Robert Kennedy's marble gravestone are the words from
Aeschylus that he could recite from memory:
"He who learns must suffer. And even in our sleep, pain that cannot
forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against
our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God."
Why is it mostly the good guy who get assasinated?
Because it's mostly bad guys who do the assassinating.  less

In June 2000, a group of top government scientists and health officials gathered for a meeting at the isolated Simpsonwood conference   more...center in Norcross, Georgia. Convened by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the meeting was held at this Methodist retreat center, nestled in wooded farmland next to the Chattahoochee River, to ensure complete secrecy. The agency had issued no public announcement of the session -- only private invitations to fifty-two attendees. There were high-level officials from the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration, the top vaccine specialist from the World Health Organization in Geneva and representatives of every major vaccine manufacturer, including GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Wyeth and Aventis Pasteur. All of the scientific data under discussion, CDC officials repeatedly reminded the participants, was strictly "embargoed." There would be no making photocopies of documents, no taking papers with them when they left.

The federal officials and industry representatives had assembled to discuss a disturbing new study that raised alarming questions about the safety of a host of common childhood vaccines administered to infants and young children. According to a CDC epidemiologist named Tom Verstraeten, who had analyzed the agency's massive database containing the medical records of 100,000 children, a mercury-based preservative in the vaccines -- thimerosal -- appeared to be responsible for a dramatic increase in autism and a host of other neurological disorders among children. "I was actually stunned by what I saw," Verstraeten told those assembled at Simpsonwood, citing the staggering number of earlier studies that indicate a link between thimerosal and speech delays, attention-deficit disorder, hyperactivity and autism. Since 1991, when the CDC and the FDA had recommended that three additional vaccines laced with the preservative be given to extremely young infants -- in one case, within hours of birth -- the estimated number of cases of autism had increased fifteenfold, from one in every 2,500 children to one in 166 children.
