Dr. John Breeding, Ph.D. Psychologist, talks about depression. In this video he discusses the how psychology and psychiatry differ from their approach to depression. Is depression really a chemical imbalance   more...in the brain or a psychological problem? Often time people are given antidepressants like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, Celexa, Lexapro, Effexor or Wellbutrin.

SSRI (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are often promoted as correcting chemical imbalances in the brain but there is no proof that depression or mental illness is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain nor is there any proof that antidepressants correct an imbalance. These medications often time have horrible side effects like agitation and sexual dysfunction.

This is a different view of depression.

Dr. John Breeding, Ph.D. psychologist discusses what is termed obsessive compulsive disorder or OCD.

Dr. Breeding discusses potential psychological causes of an obsession or a compulsion as well as how   more...to discharge negative emotion and love oneself.

Psychiatry often prescribes psychotic medications for obsessions and compulsions. Off label medication are often prescribed for this problem including mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, anxiety medications, antidepressants, etc.

Common OCD medications include Paxil, Prozac, Luxox, Zoloft, Lexapro as well as a number of SSRI antidepressants. Other medications often prescribed but not necessarily approved for OCD by the FDA include, Neurontin, Lamictal, Zyprexas and Risperdal. All of these medications have undesireable side effects and do not address the underlying cause of the psychological disorder. None of these drugs are actual cures.

Dr. Breeding discusses how to address obsessions and compulsions for a psychological model.

Poor Alex was run over by a car a few days ago. Alex is now all set up in a wire crate in my home office. Poor baby is half bald! He has an incision running all down the side of his back across his belly   more...and up to his sternum. The two interior muscles of the abdominal wall had ripped clean off his rib cage. The vet tucked his intestines all back in, and carefully wrapped the edges of the muscles around his ribs and sewed them on that way. Alex is so sweet! He is just laying on his towel making biscuits watching me. He is so happy to be home. The vet seems to think Alex will make it. I did not even ask how much his vet bill is going to be. Finances are strapped right now. I'm not looking forward to seeing the bill. Especially since he spent two nights at the vet, with the vet going in 4 times a night to check on him, and the surgery was 1 1/2 hours long.  less
