Canadians Protest At The Montebello Summit

Outside the Chateau Montebello grounds, police in riot gear jostled with about 50 hardcore protesters, using pepper spray and at least one canister of tear gas   more...to push them back. Some protesters responded by tossing objects at police.
Four arrests were made, and several police officers suffered minor injuries.
Protesters from the Canadian Labour Congress who wanted a "family friendly" demonstration stayed back from the police.
Asked by reporters about the protest, Harper said: "I've heard it's nothing. A couple hundred? It's sad."
The demonstration petered out by late afternoon.
Ten busloads of protesters from Ottawa arrived just after noon and spilled on to the highway running through the hamlet of Montebello.
More than 500 people marched along the main road toward the gate of the summit compound, chanting slogans and carrying banners, including one reading: "Say No To Americanada."
Meanwhile, more protesters, some carrying anarchist flags, came from Montreal's Concordia University aboard a convoy of yellow school buses.
Some held signs describing Bush as a war criminal and urging an end to environmental destruction.
Protesters are prohibited from entering the compound but their demonstrations are being broadcast in the hotel lobby via two video monitors.


Secrecy complaint:

Many activists are upset with what they see as a lack of transparency surrounding the SPP process.
While a group of top business executives will get a chance to make a presentation to the three leaders on Tuesday, no such invitation was extended to environmental or social activists.
Maude Barlow of the Council of Canadians attacked the SPP process as being "profoundly undemocratic."
She said the North American Competitiveness Council, the group that will meet with the leaders, is made up of 10 corporate bosses from each country and includes giant corporations like Wal-Mart, General Electric and Lockheed Martin.
Barlow told a Monday news conference that big business would like to see a competitive North American trade bloc.
"And for this they need regulatory, resource, labour and environmental convergence to the lowest common standards," she said.
"This is not about security for people, social security, security for the poor, environmental security or job security. This is about security for the big corporations for North America."  less

New documentary delves into the darkest recesses of the Global Elite!
Alex Jones' brand new documentary Endgame charts the history of the
elite blueprint for social domination and control, outlining the   more...ultimate
plans that those who consider themselves the anointed have for our

The first section of the film documents the rise of the banking cartels,

This business-friendly, labor-hating government is actually trying to set
up a judicial, administrative, media regime that will undo the New Deal.
After the Great Depression of 1929, mass movements, such as rent
riots, sit-ins, marches, and great demonstrations, struck the country.
One such movement was for pensions for those who spent their lives
working in hard toil. Movements such as these in the 1930s changed
things. Scholars Frances Fox Piven and (the late) Richard Cloward,
noted, in *The New Class War: Reagan's Attack on the Welfare State
and Its Consequences* (Pantheon Books: 1982/1985 [revised/expanded
edition]), p. 118: "In other words, the movements changed reality; they
Transformed the State."

The Enron scandal was a financial scandal that was revealed in late
2001. After a series of revelations involving irregular accounting
procedures bordering on fraud, perpetrated throughout the 1990s,
involving Enron and its accounting firm Arthur Andersen, it stood at the
verge of undergoing the largest bankruptcy in history by mid-November
2001. A white knight rescue attempt by a similar, smaller energy
company, Dynegy, was not viable. Enron filed for bankruptcy on
December 2, 2001.

As the scandal was revealed, Enron shares dropped from over
US$90.00 to just pennies. As Enron had been considered a blue chip
stock, this was an unprecedented and disastrous event in the financial
world. Enron's plunge occurred after it was revealed that much of its
profits and revenue were the result of deals with special purpose entities
(limited partnerships which it controlled). The result was that many of
Enron's debts and the losses that it suffered were not reported in its
financial statements.

In addition, the scandal caused the dissolution of Arthur Andersen,
which at the time was one of the world's top five accounting firms.  less

Every American president, whether Democrat or Republican,
conservative or liberal, speaks lovingly of 'democracy', whenever the
nation engages in some escapade abroad. When the U.S. invaded Iraq,
it did   more...so, ostensibly, to 'bring democracy to the Middle East.' When it
launches a raid in Grenada, or rains death on a poor neighborhood in
Panama, when it invaded Haiti in the last century, ad infinitum, it always
did so in the name of 'restoring democracy.'

What is this democracy of which they so blithely speak?

We all have heard the term since our infancy, but who really knows
what it means? I wanted to learn more about it, so I began to read one
of the finest historians I know of, the great C.L.R. James, author of the
ground-breaking *The Black Jacobins*, an influential study of the Haitian
Revolution. Some years ago, James published a pamphlet titled, *Every
Cook Can Govern: A Study of Democracy in Ancient Greece* (Jackson,
MS: New Mississippi, Inc., Mar. 1986). I found myself (as I often am
when I read his stuff) blown away by what I learned. As his subtitle
suggests, James looks at Greek history for the roots of the democratic
idea, and finds it, in some stages, truly democratic, in ways we can
hardly imagine. He writes:

Perhaps the most striking thing about Greek democracy was that the
administration (and there were immense administrative problems) was
organized upon the basis of what is known as sortition, or, more easily,
selection by lot. The vast majority of Greek officials were chosen by a
method which amounted to putting names into a hat and appointing the
ones whose names came out. Now the average C10 bureaucrat or Labor
Member of Parliament in Britain would fall in a fit if it was suggested to
him that any worker selected at random could do the work he is doing.
But that was precisely the guiding principle of Greek democracy. And
this form of government is the government under which flourished the
greatest civilization the world has ever known.  less
