 | | Pandoras Box 03:22According to Edith Hamilton in Mythology the source of all misfortune was Pandora's curiosity. "The gods presented her with a box into which each had put something harmful, and forbade her ever to more...open it. Then they sent her to Epimetheus, who took her gladly although Prometheus had warned him never to accept anything from Zeus. He took her, and afterward when that dangerous thing, a woman, was his, he understood how good his brother's advice had been. For Pandora, like all women, was possessed of a lively curiosity. She had to know what was in the box. One day she lifted the lidand out flew plagues innumerable, sorrow and mischief for mankind. In terror Pandora clapped the lid down, but too late. One good thing, however, was thereHope. It was the only good the casket had held among the many evils, and it remains to this day mankind's sole comfort in misfortune." less Tags: pandorapandoras box fantasy mythology art Category: Arts & Animation Views: 619 Comments: 54 Added: Apr 16, 07 By: LaHelen | | | | | Fairytale 05:01This is my world; This is the world I love. Originally she was viewed as the protector goddess of Lower Egypt, and consequently depicted as a fierce lion. Indeed, her name means (female) devourer. As protectress, she was seen as defender of the pharaoh, and consequently of the chief god, Ra, who was a solar deity, gaining her the titles Lady of flame, and Eye of Ra. Later scribes sometimes named her Bastet, a variation on Bast consisting of an additional feminine suffix to the one already present, thought to have been added to emphasise pronunciation. Since Bastet would literally mean (female) of the ointment jar, Bast gradually became thought of as the goddess of perfumes, earning the title perfumed protector. In connection with this, when Anubis became the god of embalming, Bast, as goddess of ointment, became thought of as his mother, although this association was broken in later years, when Anubis became thought of as Nephthys' son. less Tags: mythology egypt goddess cat bast lahelen lorena mckennitt Category: Arts & Animation Views: 1,956 Comments: 30 Added: Jul 24, 08 By: LaHelen | | | | | John William Waterhouse 04:43Waterhouse, known to his family and friends as Nino, was born in Italy in 1849 to English parents, moving to London at an early age. Pegasus sprang from Medusa's neck when she was killed by the hero Perseus. Shortly after its birth, the magic more...steed struck the ground on Mount Helicon, and on the spot a spring, later sacred to the Muses and believed to be a source for poetic inspiration, began to flow. All longed in vain to catch and tame the creature, and this became the obsession of Bellerophon, prince of Corinth. On the advice of a seer, Bellerophon spent a night in the temple of the goddess Athena. As he slept, the goddess appeared to him with a golden bridle and told him that it would enable him to capture Pegasus. When Bellerophon awoke, he found the golden bridle beside him, and with it he easily captured and tamed the winged horse. Pegasus thereafter proved to be a great help to Bellerophon and aided the hero in his adventures against the Amazons and the Chimaera. Bellerophon was overcome by his own pride, however. When he attempted to fly to the top of Olympus to join the gods, the wise horse threw him, leaving Bellerophon to wander disconsolately about, hated by the gods. Pegasus found shelter in the Olympian stalls and was entrusted by Zeus with bringing him his lightning and thunderbolts. less Tags: pegasus flying horse mythology perseus medusa art Category: Arts & Animation Views: 306 Comments: 29 Added: May 21, 07 By: LaHelen | | | | | The Phoenix 04:42Every morning at dawn, the sun god would stop his chariot to listen to the bird sing a beautiful song while it bathed in the well. Ancient people looked up at the heavens, noted patterns and more...regular movements of the sun, moon and stars.
The height of the sun told them the time of day - the phases of the moon told them the time of the month - the position of the constellations in the night sky told them the time of the year - useful information if you want to know when to plant, when to harvest, when to hunt, when to feast, when to celebrate the re-birth of the sun in winter. They made up fables as a way of passing on their knowledge to future generations.
After thousands of years, these fables lost their original meanings and instead came to be believed as true accounts of the lives of past and present supernatural beings/gods. This was encouraged by the growing priesthood. More time passed and these stories began to be incorporated into their religious beliefs - sun gods, moon goddesses etc. Stories circulated about some of these 'sun gods' making themselves visible on earth - these were the suns/sons of gods. The rest I leave to your imagination...
