Back on the streets and I was going slow due to all the gravel on the road not because the streets were wet, however that was probably another reason as well. I'm so excited!

NASA’s New Future Moon Truck

NASA's new prototype for a future moon truck is performing perfectly in desert tests, according to NASA.

The terrestrial version of the Small   more...Pressurized Rover, which can go forward, reverse and side-to-side to tackle tough terrain, is completing a three-day drive across the Arizona desert today after a successful week of testing, NASA officials told Space.com.

"It's just an incredibly capable machine," said NASA’s Doug Craig. "It's going great and everyone's really pleased with it."

Astronauts and geologists split into two-person teams to test the unpressurized and pressurized rover versions on the barren Black Point lava fields of Arizona.

The vehicle will allow astronauts to take extended lunar road trips without the inconvenience of bulky spacesuits.

The rover is part of NASA's bid to return astronauts to the moon by 2020. While some engineers are developing program's Orion spacecraft, Ares I and V rockets, and Altair landers, others are testing how best to move astronauts on the moon once they get there.

Humans first drove vehicles on the moon in 1971, when Apollo XV astronauts Dave Scott and Jim Irwin drove the electric Lunar Roving Vehicle. Two other moon cars followed on NASA's last two Apollo flights, but those rovers were built for limited trips.

"Those lunar rovers were disposable, so they were only going to be used for two or three days," Craig said. "These that we're looking now, we're looking at up to five years length on the moon."  less

Here are some of the photos I took Monday and Tuesday on a 540 mile motorcycle ride on the desert and mountain backroads in Southern California. The route generally circled Salton Sea, with side trips   more...to places like Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Indio, and Calexico. I’ve been motorcycling for almost 40 years, and it’s by far my favorite way to travel around the country, so shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that most of these photos include my current motorcycle LOL

At one of the places I stopped to take a break, I met a Sheriff Sergeant who told me about a REALLY unusual area known as “Slab City” (which includes something called “Salvation Mountain”). Slab City is an area outside Niland (at Salton Sea) and is frequented by land squatters and RV owners. The “City” gets it name from the concrete slabs and pylons that remain from an abandoned World War II base and Marine Barracks Camp Dunlap. The area is also near a live bombing range called Chocolate Mountain Impact Area. Some of the recent movie "Into the Wild" was filmed at Slab City. Here are a couple of websites about the place:
