From Jon Hammond N.Y., NY: I was honored to be invited to be with friends, family and Atlantic Records WEA and so many Musicians on this day in 1989 in Lincoln Center. I arrived with Bernard Purdie long-time   more...Atlantic recording artist and we sat together amongst the Musicians, in concert were Modern Jazz Quartet, Roberta Flack, Phil Collins, Manhattan Transfer, Ron Carter, Sylvia Simms and at end after Ahmet's eulogy George Wein played a piano blues with Claude Nobbs on harmonica. Cocktail reception followed, it was somber but warm and joyful at the same time. Now Ahmet has passed RIP, he was always nice to me so I pass this on in their memory.

The Sound of Music version

The music for "My Favorite Things" was composed by Richard Rodgers, and the lyrics were written by Oscar Hammerstein II. In the musical, the lyrics to the song are a litany of things that Maria likes, such as "raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens." These are the things she selects to fill her mind with when times get "bad' and "sad". They then become cognitive-centering devices, objects of meditation and inspiration.

The wintertime imagery of some of the lyrics has made "My Favorite Things" a popular song during the Christmas season, and it often appears on holiday-themed albums and compilations, although in the show and movie it is sung during a summer thunderstorm.

Other versions

The song was a hit in 1968 by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass on A&M 1001(45rpm). The song has become a jazz standard, and has been performed by artists as diverse as John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane, Carmen Lundy, Dave Brubeck, Kenny Rogers, Tanya Tucker, The Derek Trucks Band, Rod Stewart, Sarah Vaughan, The Supremes, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Andre 3000 of OutKast, Kimiko Itoh, Big Brovaz, Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Andy Williams, Lorrie Morgan, Luther Vandross, Björk (in the movie Dancer in the Dark, and Incubus). Coltrane's album of the same name has been a landmark in the history of jazz for numerous reasons, not least for the rediscovery of soprano sax. The song was mixed by audio-trickster collective Negativland on their album No Business. A slightly distorted version of this song appeared in the film adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The song is played during the beginning, juxtaposed with various images from the 1960s. My Favorite Things is also said to have been Michael Jackson's favorite song of all time. The song was also used in the bridge of the Panic! At The Disco song, "Build God, Then We'll Talk".  less
