On July 16, Max Blumenthal attended Christians United for Israel's annual Washington-Israel Summit. Founded by San Antonio-based mega church pastor John Hagee, CUFI has added the grassroots muscle of   more...the Christian right to the already potent Israel lobby. Hagee and his minions have forged close ties with the Bush White House and members of Congress from Sen. Joseph Lieberman to Sen. John McCain. In its call for a unilateral military attack on Iran and the expansion of Israeli territory, CUFI has found unwavering encouragement from traditional pro-Israel groups like AIPAC and elements of the Israeli government.

But CUFI has an ulterior agenda: its support for Israel derives from the belief of Hagee and his flock that Jesus will return to Jerusalem after the battle of Armageddon and cleanse the earth of evil. In the end, all the non-believers - Jews, Muslims, Hindus, mainline Christians, etc. - must convert or suffer the torture of eternal damnation. Over a dozen CUFI members eagerly revealed to me their excitement at the prospect of Armageddon occurring tomorrow. Among the rapture ready was Republican Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. None of this seemed to matter to Lieberman, who delivered a long sermon hailing Hagee as nothing less than a modern-day Moses. Lieberman went on to describe Hagee's flock as "even greater than the multitude Moses commanded."

Throughout CUFI's Israel Summit, videographer Thomas Shomaker and I were hounded by PR agents seeking to prevent us from interviewing attendees about the End Times. The conference, we were told, was about "one message" - evangelical Christians supporting Israel. They were instructed to only interview CUFI leaders capable of sticking to the talking point that their support for Israel has, as Hagee declared, "nothing to do with the End Times." But Max was forbidden from asking Hagee about statements he made in his book, "Jerusalem Countdown," that appeared to blame Jews for their own persecution. After doing just that during a press conference, Max was removed from the conference by off-duty DC cops summoned by members of Hagee's family.  less

What motivated the 9/11 hijackers to attack the US?

US foreign policy bias for Israel in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and US
government support for other oppressive regimes in the Middle East.

The 9-11 Commission held its twelfth and final public hearing
June 16-17, 2004, in Washington, DC. On June 16 the Commission
heard from several of the federal government's top law enforcement and
intelligence experts on al Qaeda and the 9-11 plot. It was at this hearing
that the question "What motivated them to do it?" was finally asked.
Lee Hamilton, vice chair of the 9/11 Commission said, "I'm interested in
the question of motivation of these hijackers, and my question is really
directed to the agents. ... What have you found out about why these
men did what they did? What motivated them to do it?" The agents
looked at each other, apparently not eager to be the one to have to say
it. FBI Special Agent Fitzgerald stepped up to the plate and laid out the
facts, "I believe they feel a sense of outrage against the United States.
They identify with the Palestinian problem, they identify with people who
oppose repressive regimes and I believe they tend to focus their anger
on the United States." But this testimony was kept out of the 9/11
Commission Report and no recommendation was given to address the
main motive for the 9/11 attacks.

After the report was issued, the ten commissioners formed the "9-11
Public Discourse Project." At the August 2, 2005 session on foreign
policy, Lee Hamilton quickly tries to silence someone who asks why
US support for Israel isn't being addressed. The questioner started to
ask, "Mr. Hamilton? I had a quick question for you sir. I had spoken with
you on C-SPAN about a month ago ..." Immediately Hamilton interrupts
him, "I think we'd uh ..." The questioner persisted, "why aren't we
addressing the gorilla in the room? The gorilla in the room is US support
for Israel." He corrects Hamilton's claim that the Israeli-Palestinian
dispute wasn't addressed in the 9/11 Commission Report by referring to
page 147 of the report which says, "By his own account, Khalid Sheikh
Mohammed's animus toward the United States stemmed not from his
experiences there as a student, but rather from his violent disagreement
with U.S. foreign policy favoring Israel."

The questioner keeps getting interrupted by Hamilton as he
pleads, "Why aren't we addressing that sir?" Hamilton didn't answer and
dismisses the questioner, "Alright sir. Alright, this is a conversation you
and I ought to have. Let's not take up the time of our resource people.
May we go to the next question please?"

"This was sensitive ground," Hamilton and Kean say in their new
book, "Without Precedent: The Inside Story of the 9/11 Commission,"
and some commissioners worried "listed U.S. support of Israel as a root
cause of al Qaeda's opposition to the United States indicated that the
United States should reassess that policy." There is a reason

In Gaza and the West Bank, the Israeli Army and Israeli settlers have targeted the olive groves owned by Palestinians. The Army, claiming that the trees, some of them hundreds of years old, provide cover   more...to shield terrorists bulldoze, burn and uproot groves small and large, community groves and those owned by individual families.

The Israeli government, under the guise of performing "road improvements", orders the bulldozing of groves withing 200 feet of roadways.

Israeli settlers destroy the groves owned by Palestinians, as part of their encroachment upon Palestinian lands.

Whatever the excuse claimed for the destruction of the groves, the real intent is to remove from Palestinians their livelihood, as well as as a symbolic affront.

Despite a clear prohibition in the Torah against the cutting of the enemy's trees ("Even if you are at war with a city ... you must not destroy its trees" (Deut 20:19)) the tactic has been used for decades as a weapon against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

Not only are trees destroyed but, in many cases, the hardy trees are uprooted and transported to be sold by landscaping and nurseries in Israel at a huge profit to homeowners, businesses, and city landscapers. What represents the only economic source for Palestinians is a pricey commodity for city-dwellers in Israel.

There are a number of groups and organizations, world-wide, including Israeli, working to stop the destruction of the groves and to replant trees in Gaza and the West Bank.  less

Raw : Since the end of August, fishermen from Gaza - frequent targets of the Israeli navy - have been accompanied out to sea by members of the NGO International Solidarity Movement. For almost two months, six international volunteers from the International Solidarity Movement have entered the daily lives of Gazan fishermen.
