According to something I read in a blog but haven't confirmed, Youth For Service ceased operation last year, just shy of 50 years after its inception.

"Youth For Service was founded in 1957 as a project of the American Friends service committee. Orville Luster joined the agency in 1959 and over the next decade Youth For Service evolved into a nationally recognized model youth program aimed at addressing San Francisco's gang violence. Youth For Service became intimately involved and linked with delinquency prevention, youth advocacy, conflict resolution, community street work, job training, education and community service. Its multi-racial staff reached out and brought together young adults from San Francisco's Bayview Hunters point, Chinatown, Mission, Tenderloin, Western Addition/ Fillmore, South of Market, and outer mission districts. Youth for Service defied the skeptics and harnessed the talents and skills of teenage gang leadership. Youth For Service participants painted houses for seniors, built mini-parks, and restored play areas for people of their communities. many returned to school, joined the armed services, or obtained jobs, becoming productive, active members of the larger society."  less
