The 1000 Islands archipelago is shared by Canada and the USA. Located in the St Lawrence River between the Province of Ontario and New York State, its islands officially number 1,793. To be considered   more...one of the "1000 Islands", an island had to be at least one square foot in size, be above water level all year round, and support at least one living tree. As you'll see, some of the islands are just big enough to hold a one-room cottage, while others, like Heart Island, are large enough to accommodate a castle and all its trimmings! World’s first ever undersea restaurant called “Ithaa” was opened at the Maldives Hilton Resort & Spa.

The official opening of the restaurant is scheduled for 27th June 2005.

Ithaa ( which is pronounced   more...“ee-tha” and means “pearl” in the language of Maldives, Dhivehi sits five metres below the waves of the Indian Ocean, surrounded by vibrant coral reef and encased in clear acrylic walls, offering diners 270 degrees of panoramic underwater views.

Seating only 14 people, Ithaa offers one of the most intimate and exclusive dining experiences in the world. The cuisine is "contemporary Maldivian" (local spices and traditional flavours with a Western twist).

However there is more to the Maldives than just that.

This group of 1190 coral islands is also a major destination for scuba divers, who come for the fabulous reefs and the wealth of marine life; however, this is not a place for low budget backpackers or amateur anthropologists who want to travel independently and live as the locals do.  less

In October of 2000, me and my family flew south of the Equator to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. Truly a magical place, and it was a privilege to visit.

The island is roughly 36 miles in circumference   more...and is surrounded by a barrier reef. The protection from predators makes it a haven for some incredible underwater life. The native people I met there (Maori) were some of the kindest I'll ever meet. At 3:41 you can see Piri at the top of that coconut tree. He scaled it in maybe 20 seconds. A wonderful, kind man who helped us learn many local customs. You can learn about him here:
