AT&T chief Ed Whitacre handed the keys over to his replacement Randall Stephenson, but not before giving a rousing pep talk to fellow executives in the company’s San Antonio board room. We just received   more...exclusive video of the AT&T chairman’s parting speech.

“There’s a problem. It’s called Net Neutrality,” Whitacre told the heirs to AT&T’s telecommunications empire. “Well, frankly, we say to hell with that. We’re gonna put up some toll booths and start charging admission.”This statement echoes those made in the press by Whitacre and Stephenson over the last two years.

Despite claims of poverty whenever pressed to offer better services, these AT&T execs are privately gloating over more than $35 billion in gross profits over the last 12 months. Moreover, Whitacre (and now Stephenson) are pressuring Congress to allow them to provide privileged Web access to their customers to companies that pay them a special fee.

“Will Congress let us do it?” Whitacre asks his colleagues. “You bet they will - cuz we don’t call it cashin’ in. We call it ‘deregulation.’ “

LiveVideo wouldn't let the original video be uploaded (even though I made it clear that it might be inappropriate for viewers under 18). In a vain attempt to get people to watch, I've recut this and omitted   more...pictures of breasts, penises, vaginas, nude hermaphrodites, and nude transssexuals (which everyone believes was the problem). Despite the fact that all the objectionable pictures were aquired from publicly available sources that do not require age verification (e.g., MySpace and Wikipedia). So, this is the PG-13 version. The quality has been diminished by this. But, I hope it is still informative and entertaining for you.

Hemp for Victory is a black-and-white United States government film made during the Second World War, explaining the uses of hemp. The film shows a history of hemp and hemp products, how hemp is grown,   more...and how hemp processed into rope, cloth, cordage and other products.

The film was made to encourage farmers to grow hemp for the war effort because the United States was facing a hemp shortage. produced in 1942 by the USDA outlining a plan to distribute 400,000 lbs. of cannabis seeds to American farmers with the goal of producing 350,000 acres of cannabis by 1943. The USDA even went as far as to urge 4-H clubs to grow at least half an acre, but preferably 2 acres of cannabis. All American farmers were required to see the film, sign a paper saying that they had viewed the film, and read a booklet on the matter. Farmers who agreed were waived from serving in the military, and all their family members were also exempt. They received farm equipment at a discounted price, and sometimes for free.

However, before and after the war -- the same plant was considered "demon weed" and the killer of the same kids that were pressed into service to grow it during the war.

Before 1989, the film was relatively unknown, and the United States Department of Agriculture library and the Library of Congress told all interested parties that no such movie was made by the USDA or any branch of the U.S. government. Two VHS copies were recovered and donated to the Library of Congress on May 19, 1989 by Maria Farrow, Carl Packard, and Jack Herer.

Hemp for Victory is also the title of a book about hemp, published 2006 in London by Whitaker Press (ISBN 0-9549939-0-X). It is the work of several authors active in the hemp world, including Kenyon Gibson, Nick and Cindy Mackintosh, Woody Harrelson, Mina Hegaard and Sam Heslop. The title is taken from the 1942 film, as described above, and contains a transcript of the same. The book covers the history of hemp and then goes into a section on the many uses of hemp, with practical information on paper, hemp oil, hemp fuel, textiles, rope, etc. Processing and cultivation are also covered systematically, with much reference information given throughout, including a list of world-wide hemp shops and a bibliography. Linked to this book is a blog site titled Hemp for Victory - www.hempforvictory.blogspot.com, where news, events and technical information are posted regularly. With the word search feature, this site allows for users to be taken to a specific subject instantly, making it an indexed source of information of much use to the hemp world.  less

The film was made in order to make a case for the desegregation of the United States armed forces. Due to fears that the film would be offensive to racist White Southerners, the film was not intended initially to be broadcast to the general public.  less

Despotism, 1946
This 10-minute film from Encyclopedia Britannica Films features Dr. Harold D. Lasswell of Yale, who was a professor of law and of political science at the school while both our current   more...and our most recent presidents were students there.

The film, produced in the immediate aftermath of World War II, presents a spectrum from democracy to despotism. And it begins with this cautionary note:

Avoid the comfortable idea that the mere form of government can of itself safeguard a nation against despotism. ... When a competent observer looks for signs of despotism in a community, he looks beyond fine words and noble phrases.

That last is shown against a backdrop of patriotic Americans reciting the (original) Pledge of Allegiance, which fades into the silhouette of a lynching. That's the implicit message of this film, It Can Happen Here.

We are introduced to a man "who makes it his business to study these things" -- presumably Dr. Lasswell. The professor offers two "yardsticks" for measuring the existence of despotism or democracy in a given community or nation.

The Respect Scale ranges from shared to restricted, and measures "how many citizens get an even break." The Power Scale ranges from shared to concentrated. "The test of despotic power is that it can disregard the will of the people," the professor says. It's notable that in this 1946 film, both racism and anti-Semitism are offered as examples of despotic tendencies.

But here's where the film really gets interesting. The professor then offers two more scales by which, he says, an observer can determine whether a nation is headed toward democracy or toward despotism. These scales are Economic Distribution and Information.

Here's what the professor has to say about economic distribution, which he measures on a scale from "balanced" to "slanted":

If a community's economic distribution becomes slanted, its middle-income groups grow smaller and despotism stands a better chance to gain a foothold. ...

If this condition exists over the nation as a whole, so that the control of jobs and business opportunities is in a few hands, despotism stands a good chance. ...

Another sign of a poorly balanced economy is a taxation system that presses heaviest on those least able to pay.

In 1946, the unjust or inequitable distribution of wealth was perceived as a dangerous tendency and a threat to democracy. The Cold War hadn't yet begun in earnest.

Over the following decades, Soviet despotism rose as a challenge to democracy in the world. And because Soviet despotism was nominally about the redistribution of wealth, talk about equitable economic distribution as a necessary prerequisite for healthy democracy became suspect. And not just suspect, but condemned as anti-democratic and anti-American.

The professor's final scale, which measures information on a range from "uncontrolled" to "controlled" seems eerily prescient, forecasting the McCarthyism to come. He wasn't really forecasting, of course, he was simply describing the past two decades in Europe.

A community rates low on an information scale when the press, radio and other channels of communication are controlled by only a few people, and when citizens have to accept what they are told. In communities of this kind, despotism stands a good chance. ...

If books, newspapers and the radio are efficiently controlled, the people will read and accept exactly what the few in control want them to.  less
