One of the more unusual sights in Ottawa and certainly for Parliament Hill.
The cat colony on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
According   more...to some sources, Colonel By, builder of the Rideau Canal, brought cats up on the Hill, then known as Barracks Hill as this was the military encampment in the days when Ottawa was still the rustic backwater called By Town, to deal with the mouse and rat populations. Certainly, after the building of both the first Parliament Buildings (burned to the ground in 1919) and the current buildings, cats lived in the buildings and took care of vermin. However, when poisons eliminated the need for cats, the feline residents of Parliament Hill were left homeless. Employees brought food to feed the cats but no organized care was provided the cats.
However, over the years, dedicated volunteers have fed and cared for the colony, eventually getting permission to provide shelter and food on site. The cats are all spayed or neutered and veterinary care is provided by an Ottawa veterinary hospital. Food is provided by a pet food manufacturer and public donations are gratefully received.
Rene Chartrand, whom you see in the video, has been the primary caregiver for many years. Rene is now in his 80s, though he most certainly doesn't look it!
The colony currently has 28 feline residents and a number of raccoon and squirrel hangers-on.
