Cisco Systems Slashes 129 Texas Jobs Despite Profits

San Jose-based Cisco Systems has informed the state of Texas that 129 employees at the company’s Richardson facility will   more...be laid off.

The multinational computer networking company says the staff reductions are part of the company's decision to cease operations of its Broadband Telephony Services unit. Staff reductions began on October 8th and will be complete within a month.

A spokesperson for Cisco said the layoffs are not related to the slowing economy, but are a part of the company's strategy as it, quote “continuously evaluates its businesses to align human and capital resources to address key growth opportunities and improve efficiency.” Unquote.

For fiscal year 2008, Cisco’s earnings jumped 12 percent over the previous year, hitting $8.1 billion. During the fourth quarter, Cisco’s net income rose 6 percent over the previous year to $2 billion.

Founded in 1984, Cisco designs and sells networking & communications technology and services under five brands -- Cisco, Linksys, WebEx, IronPort, and Scientific Atlanta.
