Text from Wikipedia: The Plastibell Circumcision Device is a clear plastic ring with handle designed for male neonatal circumcision that has a deep groove running circumferentially. The adhesions between   more...glans and foreskin are divided with a probe. Then the foreskin is cut longitudinally to allow it to be retracted and the glans (the head of penis) to be exposed.

The Plastibell comes in 6 sizes. The appropriate one is chosen and applied to the head. The ring is then covered over by the foreskin. A ligature is tied firmly around the foreskin, crushing the skin against the groove in the Plastibell. Then the excess skin protruding beyond the ring is trimmed off. Finally, the handle is broken off at the end of the procedure.

The entire procedure takes five to ten minutes, depending on the experience and skill of the surgeon. The ring falls off in 3 to 7 days leaving a circumferential wound that will heal over the following week. Typically, the glans will appear red or yellow until it has cornified.

At least 50% of American non-therapeutic infant circumcisions since 1980 have been performed with a Plastibell.  less

Male circumcision is the removal of some or all of the foreskin (prepuce) from the penis.[1] The word "circumcision" comes from Latin circum (meaning "around")   more...and cædere (meaning "to cut").

Early depictions of circumcision are found in cave drawings and Ancient Egyptian tombs, though some pictures may be open to interpretation.[2][3][4] Male circumcision is considered a commandment from God in Judaism.[5] In Islam, though not discussed in the Qur'an, circumcision is widely practiced and most often considered to be a sunnah.[6] It is also customary in some Christian churches in Africa, including some Oriental Orthodox Churches.[7] According to the World Health Organization (WHO), global estimates suggest that 30% of males are circumcised, of whom 68% are Muslim.[8] The prevalence of circumcision varies mostly with religious affiliation, and sometimes culture.

There is controversy surrounding circumcision. Advocates for circumcision state that it provides important health advantages which outweigh the risks, has no substantial effects on sexual function, has a low complication rate when carried out by an experienced physician, and is best performed during the neonatal period.[9] Opponents of circumcision state that it is extremely painful, adversely affects sexual pleasure and performance, may increase the risk of certain infections, and when performed on infants and children violates the individual's human rights.[10]

The American Medical Association stated in 1999: "Virtually all current policy statements from specialty societies and medical organizations do not recommend routine neonatal circumcision, and support the provision of accurate and unbiased information to parents to inform their choice."[11]

For infant circumcision, modern devices such as the Gomco clamp, Plastibell, and Mogen clamp are available.[14]

With all modern devices the same basic procedure is followed. First, the amount of foreskin to be removed is estimated. The foreskin is then opened via the preputial orifice to reveal the glans underneath and ensure it is normal. The inner lining of the foreskin (preputial epithelium) is then bluntly separated from its attachment to the glans. The device is then placed (this sometimes requires a dorsal slit) and remains there until blood flow has stopped. Finally, the foreskin is amputated.[15]  less

The American Academy of Pediatrics says:

Of course here, they hedge and say while even though cutting off part of your baby's genitalia "is not essential to the child's current well-being" they are perfectly fine with parents and doctors using cultural tradition as justification. This report is also the first time the AAP has acknowledged(after decades of doctors mindlessly repeating the belief that babies don't feel significant pain) that circumcision without anesthesia is traumatic and if circumcision is to be done, anesthesia should be used.

I would like to know if the AAP thinks cultural tradition is an acceptable reason to cut off the clitoral hoods(biologically analogous to foreskin) of infant girls especially if it is done with anesthesia as is the case here: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWvi475cYZY">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWvi475cYZY</a>

With his best-selling book "Baby and Child Care", Dr Benjamin Spock influenced several generations of parents to be more flexible and affectionate with their children, and to treat them as individuals   more...(whereas the previous conventional wisdom had been that child rearing should focus on building discipline, and that, eg, babies should not be "spoiled" by picking them up when they cried).

The First Edition (1946) followed the conventional wisdom on circumcision: he recommended it. In the Sixth Edition (1985) he wrote about circumcising healthy children, "I strongly recommend leaving the foreskin alone. Parents should insist on convincing reasons for circumcision — and there are no convincing reasons that I know of."

In this video, he is referring to how some American parents would bring their child to a doctor with the complaint that the child was exploring his or her own genitalia in a sexual way. In these cases, the doctor would often diagnose the cause as an 'irritated' glans hood. In order to reduce the child's pleasure-motive(the whole underside of the foreskin is sexually sensitive to stimulation as opposed to the non-sexual shaft skin) and to reduce the ease of the child masturbating(circumcised males often need to use artificial lubrication to masturbate without rubbing themselves raw), the doctor would then circumcise the child.
