This video is a brief explanation of the rules of Australian Rules Football or Aussie Rules as it is commonly called.

I have also added numerous short videos to further illustrate aspects of the game   more...that can be accessed in the video responses to this video.

One aspect I overlooked is the punch. This is a defensive technique often used in a marking contest by a player who is out of position in relation to his direct opponent. For example if a player is caught behind his opponent as the ball is coming towards them and it is clear the player in front will mark the ball, the player caught behind will try and punch the ball away to prevent the mark. Care needs to be taken to avoid high contact.

The game is played at a fast pace with players playing on at every available opportunity. This means that extremely high levels of fitness and strength are required with players regularly running 20km or more each game. Imagine running twenty 100 metre sprints over a two hour period while simultaneously trying to catch and control an oval ball while fending off attacks from 18 other players and you will begin to understand what is required of an Aussie Rules Footballer.

History:
Aussie Rules is the world's oldest football code being codified in Melbourne Australia in 1858 and was partly inspired by the aboriginal kicking/catching game called Marn Grook. This means the games origins are potentially tens of thousands of years old. The Melbourne Football Club is the worlds oldest being formed in 1859. The first night game was played in 1879.

This beer advertisement demonstrates that the Australian authorities need to tone down their emotional anti-whaling rhetoric, and be very very careful to monitor the situation and not themselves contribute towards incitement of racially based violence on Australian soil. In light of this distasteful campaign, were I Japanese I would be extremely careful about myself if I were in Australia over the coming summer, whether that be at the pub or down on the beach. The combination of alcohol and the hysteria in Australia surrounding the whaling issue makes me extremely fearful of the possibility of racially motivated violence being born out of this situation.

It was only last year that Sydney experienced major riots related to racial tension.

About the Dingo and Kangaroo

The Dingo is on brink of extinction and now listed on the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable. There are small pockets of pure dingoes left in only some areas, but they remain a species listed as agricultural pests, so farmers destroy them. The dingo population has been severely threatened by the widespread eradication regimes such as poisoning, shooting, trapping and habitat loss. Dingoes are not dogs. They have always been a wild canine. Pure dingoes, like wolves, are still locked in genetically to annual breeding seasons. Australia holds the world record for mammal extinctions. It would be an abomination if dingoes were added to this list. Australia is now ranked the 4th highest in the world for the extinction of native species.

Just like dogs, cats, and whales, kangaroos feel pain and suffer and deserve to be protected from needless suffering and death. Protests in Australia against the kangaroo slaughter have been ignored. Zoologists worry that the kangaroo may become extinct in some areas if the slaughter is not ended very soon.

AUSTRALIAN UFO WAVE

In April 2006, the Australian Film Commission funded an experimental digital video project by director Christopher Kenworthy.   more...Between June and mid-August 2006 thirty-one clips of UFOs were created. The UFO videos were distributed over the internet via websites and video podcasts, as well as being presented at a website titled the Australian UFO Wave.

By the middle of 2006, word about the videos spread, as new videos continued to be added - some were excited by the footage, others remained cynical. The project was hugely successful, being viewed by many millions of people. Very few people suspected that the clips were manufactured. Gradually, the level of plausibility was reduced, but only when the last two clips were uploaded did a large number of people get suspicious. (At the start of August, a new video - this time of an actual alien - seemed to tip the scales for most everyone in favour of the site being a hoax.)

So, in mid-August, an Australian filmmaker by the name of Christopher Kenworthy stepped forward to claim responsibility, describing the project not as a hoax or deception, but as "an immersive artwork".

Christopher Kenworthy also revealed that the site was part of a larger project, that of creating a documentary about the 'immersive artwork' and public reaction, which was made possible by a grant from the Australian Film Commission.

So can it still be classed as a funded disinformation campaign when it’s openly stated as such? (Well, it was stated a couple of months after the first clips were uploaded.)
