Over the past year, she offered land for a permanent cell tower, and Verizon Wireless embarked on an expensive public process to meet her needs, hiring contractors and seeking county land-use permits.
Verizon ultimately abandoned its effort to install a permanent tower in August. Company spokesman Jeffrey Nelson said the project would be "an inappropriate way" to build its network. "It doesn't make business sense for us to do that," he added.
Instead, Verizon delivered a portable tower known as a "cell site on wheels" -- free of charge -- to the McCain property in June, after the Secret Service began inquiring about improving coverage in the area. Such devices are used for providing temporary capacity where coverage is lacking or has been knocked out, in circumstances ranging from the Super Bowl to hurricanes.
In July, AT&T followed suit, wheeling in a portable tower for free to match Verizon's offer. "This is an unusual situation," AT&T spokeswoman Claudia B. Jones said. "You can't have a presidential nominee in an area where there is not cell coverage."

In a meta-analysis published in the May 2008 issue of the International Journal of Oncology, Swedish researchers found significant associations between long-term cell phone use and brain tumor risk. In July 2008 market research firm MultiMedia Intelligence reported that more than 16 million U.S. teens use cell phones.

"We found that cell phone use is linked to gliomas [malignant brain tumors] and acoustic neuromas [benign tumors of the brain's auditory nerve] and are showing up after only ten years," says lead author Lennart Hardell, an oncologist and cancer epidemiologist at University Hospital in Örebro, Sweden. Specifically, for studies that included at least 10 years of exposure, there was a doubling in the risk of gliomas for ipsilateral (same-side) but not contralateral (opposite-side) exposures to the head (as reflected by which hand the subject typically used to hold his/her cell phone). A 2.4-fold increase in risk was seen for acoustic neuromas due to ipsilateral exposures, whereas no increased risk occurred for meningiomas (tumors that occur in the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord).

It appears that students at the University of Baiona have been complaining of headaches, breathing problems and dizziness (symptoms of microwave exposure illness). In response the University is conducting air testing. When the University WiFi system failed, persons on the campus soon noticed an improvement in their health.

Most Cell phone headsets come in three different types. There are ear buds with integrated microphones, units with retractable cords, and headsets with boom microphones. Most mobile headsets work with any cellular phone and most are reasonably priced. Some cellular phones use a proprietary plug which when a headset is not compatible with it, can use an adaptor and make the cellular headset compatible.

Traffic accidents are the No. 1 killer of U.S. teens and most everyone agrees that driving distractions play a large role in this statistic. One of the most obvious driving distractions, for both teens and adults, is cell phone use while driving. It comes as no surprise that the state of California has passed a law that will limit cell phone use for drivers in the future. Since this law has been passed, there has been plenty of confusion about what the law is and when the law will be in effect.

Most simply, the new law becomes operative July 1st, 2008 and states that no person (teen or adult) may "drive a motor vehicle motor vehicle while using a wireless telephone unless that telephone is specifically designed and configured to allow hands-free listening and talking, and is used in that manner while driving." (as stated in CA Vehicle Code Division 11, Chapter 12, Article 1 >> Section 23123)

So basically, starting July 2008 adults need to go "hands-free" and won't be able to have a phone in their hand while driving (with certain exceptions*).

For teens, the law is even more prohibitive. The new law makes it illegal for those under age 18 to use ANY cell phone device (including hands-free devices), text message devices and laptop computers while driving.

What’s the punishment for violating this new law? A base fine of $20 for a first offense and $50 for each subsequent offense.

Does this mean that we should use our phones while we drive as much as possible until July 2008? NO!!! Not only does driving with a cell phone (hands-free or otherwise) increase your chance of being distracted, it can still lead to a traffic ticket. What? That’s right, talking on a cell phone while driving can lead to hazardous or reckless driving – and you can definitely be ticketed for that.
