On a recent inter-state flight, Emily Bouchard, founder of Blended-Families.com, had the pleasure of sitting next to a delightful 12-year-old girl who was traveling alone to spend a long weekend with   more...her father. The Air Line Pilots Association has negotiated a tentative employment agreement with Fort Worth, Texas-based AMR Corp., parent of American Eagle Airlines.

The agreement   more...will amend the union’s 16-year contract with American Eagle,
negotiated in 1997. The union represents 2,800 American Eagle pilots.

The deal will likely ensure more take-home pay for many pilots, by improving such items as the minimum value of a workday and provisions for vacation payout.

Union chairman Herb Mark stated, “Our negotiators were asked to bring us an agreement that increases quality of life wherever possible but includes no concessions. This tentative agreement accomplishes that mission….”

American Eagle is the world’s largest regional airline system, operating over 1,800 flights a day, and serving 159 cities across the USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. It was established in 1984.  less

As gas prices continue to rise throughout the U.S., many companies are being affected, including American Airlines. As the biggest carrier in the nation, American Airlines is being forced to cut back   more...on flights as of this fall, which will ultimately mean less payable hours for workers. To deter American Airlines from lying off pilots, their union proposed a plan to offer retirement incentives and to decrease flying hours. The Allied Pilots Association wants to limit flying to 75 hours, instead of the usual 78 hours per month. However, American Airlines has a different approach. AA proposed a plan to increase the amount of hours each pilot worked so there would be fewer pilots on staff. The union also proposed a plan to encourage retirement by adding 5 years to their retirement packages. If the Union and AA do not come up with a plan to downsize its workforce, up to 200 pilots could be let off after Labor Day. EmploymentCrossing.com  less

The travel industry has been hit harder this summer than any other year - thanks to climbing oil and gas prices... And it’s the workers that are feeling the pinch.
American Airlines announced that it would   more...scale back on its workforce, including 200 pilots by October. In response to the job cuts… the pilots union are seeking the courts help in saving these aviator jobs. The union plans to sue for the right to tell its members not to work voluntary overtime.
Lloyd Hill, the President of Allied Pilot Association said that the union was committed to using legal methods for mitigating pilot furloughs and those members who were the most at risk of losing their jobs have been recalled back to their jobs.
Representatives from American Airlines couldn’t be reached for comment. But did mention that the union had not responded to a proposal that would offer incentives of up to 4.5 months of severance pay for some senior captains and allow the carrier to schedule pilots for more hours each month.
According to the union, the American Airlines may schedule a 78 hour shift for pilots, but it also allows them to fly an additional five hours if necessary.
