Well, these days I trust myself over most garages. It goes this way: they give the easy jobs to the apprentices who make mistakes and the more difficult stuff gets done by the more experienced. So unless you have internal engine stuff to do do it yourself

We’re looking at the house price situation too, in fact we spent all day Friday looking at property (vlogs to follow). It's really hard to know how to play this one, what with the recent interest rate cuts. Up until last week I thought we'd be in for

a 20% drop over the next 12 months, but now I'm not so sure.
A drop in house prices would be good news for us, as we’d like to move up from our link house into to a semi, or detached.

Hi M. As you know, I very bearish on the economy and property prices. I'm still on for another 20% drop even after the recent and forthcoming rate cuts (as some economists are still insisting on 43% drops from peak to trough).
The reason being, although
more...
the banks are passing the rates on to current mortgage holders on trackers and SVRs, at the same time, they are pulling deals and tightening their loan to value criteria. First time buyers still need big deposits to get a decent mortgage rate and after Xmas we will see unemployment kick in with a vengeance.
In the nineties rates were dropped from 15% to 6% and prices still carried on falling just like they are in the US where rates have been slashed to 1%. It also looks like China now isn't as string as predicted. Although they will still have substantial positive economic growth it is forecast to be much less than previously thought. What is happing now has very remarkably strong parallels with what happened in Japan in the late 90s/00s with the collapse of liquidity in their banking system and an upcoming deflationary period which some still are not convinced of (one of the main reason the MPC was able to cut rates so sharply). The other reason they cut rates so aggressively is they have realised just how bad things actually are, I recently went to a Bank of England presentation on the economy and they have access to lots more unpublished data than the press have to base the decisions on. Even then, their predictions were very dire indeed. I believe they have suddenly seen something that has spooked them. Either way, I think we have interesting times ahead.
For a good idea of the true value of property, take a look at your local auctions. I downloaded last months catalogue and results and most lots didn't sell, even at very reasonable guide prices. If stuff doesn't sell you can still make offers after the auction. There are some real bargains to be had already for up to 50% less than current asking prices in your local estate agent's window. I was shocked, it's a real eye opener. The only downside to auctions is you need the cash readily available (within 28 days) so they don't work so great if you have a house to sell. Either way, my is plan to buy while still in my current house and then put it up for sale or auction it it after depending on the discount I get on next house.
Although I'm on for more price drops I'm keeping my eyes peeled and am prepared to throw some low ball offers around

Glad you got your video viewing problem sorted. What was it? I doubt I'll be moving house very soon, unless I can get a very good discount.

Finally, thanks to SuburbanRider, am up and running again...nice ride. Thanks. Be sure to buy a house big enough for us all to come visit...or, all move in, depending on the economy.

I generally have my bike serviced on a Saturday when I can do a walk in appointment. To guarantee good service, I also make a point of bringing in a hand gun with cleaning kit to have something to do while I wait.
They take good care of me.

I've always changed the oil in my bikes myself ... so no nasty surprises there. I used to do it with my cars as well, but now I just tend to go to one of those Jiffy Lube type places. The people who work at shops like that are not generally ace mechanics,

so I've always checked the oil level before I leave the property. Have to say though, that it's always been topped up to the correct level. So far!
This video appears to have been approved relatively quickly, btw. :)

Yeah, I always do the bike's oil myself but just can't be bothered with the car for the extra $15 extra it costs and not having 5 litres of oil to dispose of myself. Plus it also needed some work on the brakes that I couldn't do myself. After being burnt

Yeah it surprised me too. Damn garages trying to skimp on oil. I'd do it myself but I don't have a ramp and don't want to chance spilling oil on my drive, cos I always end up spilling some when I do the bike :P
