| Sunday, November 26, 2006 at 4:02 PM | | When a film crew gets caught up filming during the holidays, they often spend this emotional time away from their families, when they need family time most. That's what happened to the crew of Let's Ride. There is something special about being a production crew however. You become a new family. So this year, as the production crew of Let's Ride found themselves in Memphis, TN, away from the comforts of their homes on Thanksgiving, together they discovered new comforts. First, our morning was spent more...giving back to a community that has opened their hearts to us unconditionally. We served meals to the homeless of Memphis, along with the Mayor. The guests not only received a wonderful Thanksgiving meal, but clothing, free medical care and Verizon even set up phones so that people could reach out to family and friends they may have lost touch with, during their difficult times. You should have seen the smiles and gratitude on the faces of the guests. It is a vision I am certain most will hold in their hearts for years to come. Later in the day we gathered at a remarkable residence home for young people called Youth Villages, with our new friends from the Memphis Grizzlies basketball team. We could have stayed all day. We sat along side children who are finding their way in life. This is their second chance, maybe their only chance. We listened to their dreams, their wishes and watched them smile at the simplest gestures. We played a little basketball, laughed, shared our hearts with them and took a few pictures. For this day, we became the family they needed in their lives. Again, being a part of their Thanksgiving will stay in our hearts for some time. We became painfully aware of one amazing thing as we started back to the hotel to cook our Thanksgiving dinner. The children, no matter their plight, homeless or in the Village, were respectful, kind and full of manners. To hear ‘Yes Maam’ ‘please and thank you’ and the repeating comment from all, ‘Thank you for spending Thanksgiving with us” was the most amazing gift of the season. So as we headed back to the hotel to have a meal of our own as a new family, we sat thinking of all we are grateful for in our lives. One is the hotel where most are staying. Not only have they opened their arms and hearts, providing every service thinkable, they have become friends. Their casa became our casa, their kitchen, our kitchen. We sat together as a new family, enjoying each other in a more intimate way. We said grace over the food, laughed and ate a meal fit for royalty. We invited hotel guests, staff and a few new friends to join us. What a blessed day we had. What a lesson we learned. What amazing gifts we had received throughout the day. Here we were, wanting to be there for others. We were thinking of how much our support could help those in the community. But, we were quickly reminded that once again, the community of Memphis gave something special to us. They gave us the true meaning of gratefulness. They reminded us of the simple pleasures in life that we easily loose sight of in Los Angeles. We have plenty to be thankful for every day and every night. We have simple things… the dazzling and glorious stars in the sky, friendship, hospitality and the safety of living in such a great country, where no matter who you are, what race or religion, we are safe and free to care about anyone we want. The crew of Let’s Ride cannot help but be forever thankful to a community, who once again, out of the goodness of their hearts, brought us back to the true meaning of family, the true meaning of Thanksgiving.
