| | More About Sam the Black Cat and her Story of Mammary Adenocarcinoma | | | | Thursday, March 27, 2008 (2:48 PM) | | Sam the Black Cat was diagnosed with Feline Mammary Adenocarcinoma on July 23, 2006. Her (then) vet said she had six weeks to live. This type of cancer is one of the most aggressive (meaning, it has no trouble in spreading rapidly). The vet suggested I bring Sam back and have her euthanized.
At that time, a lump about 2 centimeters wide was removed from Sam's left breast. I had seen the lump as early as May 2006 but assumed it to be an insect bite. It started as a squishy bump, then hardened and grew outward.
Due to Sam's less-than-wonderful behavior at the vet's office, I had a very difficult time getting a referral to a veterinary oncologist. After Sam scratched him, he suggested, and I approved, that we knock her out to administer the chemo. The best thing about that is Sam doesn't remember the appointment too well! Though the vet techs say she still gets nervous on the way into the exam room.
Now Sam has been declared "clean". She's had to go back for a couple post cancer/chemo checks, mostly so her Mama can sleep at night! This last appointment the doctor said she may have something wrong with her liver and small intestine and suggested bringing Sam back in a month.
Sam has her own web page, currently it needs updating (March 08), but it's her story so far. She is one of very few cats to survive this type of feline breast cancer for so long. To read more about Sam please see superiordpweb.com/articles/Sam.html.
Thanks to everyone for all the kind comments and good wishes, they mean more to us than I can say. Thanks for watching -- Enjoy!
