| | Elections | | | | Sunday, November 2, 2008 (4:50 AM) | | Well, the clocks have moved back an hour and I tried too but I failed. I still got up too early, so I guess its going to take a few days to adjust.
I was thinking last night about the U.S. election coming up. Which by Canadian standards your election process seems to last forever.
Did you know that here in Canada a Federal Election was called about 2 months ago and all of our politicians went on planes, trains and buses and went zig-zagging around this country talking to people in cities and towns to make their point for you to vote for them. We had signs on peoples lawns, T.V. , radio commercials and news paper ads by all of the candidates that said "Vote For Me"
We had advance polls where you could vote, that went around the area a couple of times in every ones neighbourhood and there was never a line-up. Infact 37 days after our government said there was going to be an election..it was done!
We, like the U.S. had about a 60% turn out. When I went to vote on Election Day, there was no line-up, I just walked in, showed my I.D. and walked over to a certain booth, filled out my ballot, put it in a box and left! I was there 2 minutes. It was on T.V. that night, coast to coast and something that we do here in Canada because we have 6 time zones, the east coast voters can cast their votes latter than the west coast people so that all of the polling booths close at roughly the same time or atleast with-in an hour of each other. That way, people on the west coast can't see whats already happening in the east before they vote and they might just feel that there is no reason to vote because their political choice had already won or lost. It makes all Canadians feel equal and their vote counts.
Our Prime Minister announced in a week or so after the election, who he picked for certain jobs, like Secretary of Defence, Secretary of State etc. etc.and its done from start to finish in about 7 weeks!
Could you Imagine if the U.S. did that! Its just a thought.
Anyway, as you can see we handle things a little different up here. It doesn't make us right and you wrong, just like your system doesn't make you right and us wrong. Its just to say we are different. Like Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, we look at things different.
I didn't think the U.S. media would say much about "our little election" up here, so I thought I would fill you in. Infact, I made a joke last week about the U.S. attack helicopters going into Syria and taking out a building in Syria that was considered a hold-up for the bad guys. It was on Canadian news, British News and Even in India and a friend of mine said " I didn't see it on the U.S. news!" and I said " Of coarse not..they are having an election"
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my note...that killed an hour. I hope you have a nice day.
