Monica Bellucci

Monica Anna Maria Bellucci (born September 30, 1964 or 1968[A]) is an Italian actress, and fashion model. Monica Bellucci began her career as a model while studying law at the University of Perugia. In 1990, Dino Risi cast her for the Italian television series "Vita Coi Figli" and her acting career was born. She made her feature film debut in Francesco Laudadio’s "La Riffa" (1991).

Francis Coppola gave Bellucci a small role in "Bram Stoker’s Dracula" (1992) with Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins and Keanu Reeves, and she went on to star in numerous European features. In 2000, she appeared with Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman in "Under Suspicion". The following year, she co-starred in the French sensation "Le Pacte des Loupes" (2001).

Bellucci made a major impression when she starred as a raped woman in Gaspar Noé’s harrowing "Irréversible" (2002) and the actress also hit the radar of mainstream audiences when she appeared opposite Bruce Willis in Antoine Fuqua’s "Tears of the Sun" (2003). Later that same year, Bellucci entranced blockbuster-craving crowds when she was cast in the highly-anticipated back-to-back sequels "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolution" playing the beautiful and enigmatic Persephone. In 2004 Belucci had a small role, comported with much modesty, as Mary Magdalene in Mel Gibson's controversial and brutal depiction of the Crucifixtion, "The Passion of the Christ," and she also appeared in director Spike Lee's middling sex comedy "She Hate Me" (2004) as the lesbian daughter of a Mafioso who pays to be impregnated by the film's lead character (Anthony Mackie). The following year she appeared as the icy, evil Mirror Queen in director Terry Gilliam's visually arresting but disappointing fairy tale tweaking "The Brothers Grimm" (2005).

Personal life :

Bellucci was born in Città di Castello, Umbria, Italy,[3] the daughter of Maria Gustinelli, a painter, and Luigi Bellucci, who owned a trucking company.[4] Bellucci started modelling at 16, when she was attending the Liceo classico. Initially pursuing a career as a lawyer, Bellucci modeled to pay her tuition at the University of Perugia,[2] but the lifestyle tempted her away from her law studies. She speaks Italian, French, and English fluently, Spanish semi-fluently, and she has had speaking roles in each of these languages as well as in Aramaic for her part as Mary Magdalene in The Passion of the Christ.

Bellucci is married to fellow actor Vincent Cassel, with whom she has appeared in several films, and has a daughter named Deva (born September 12, 2004). In 2004, while pregnant with her daughter, Bellucci posed nude for the Italian Vanity Fair Magazine in protest against Italian laws that prevent the use of donor sperm.

Modeling :

In 1988, Bellucci moved to one of Europe's fashion centers, Milan, where she signed with Elite Model Management. By 1989, she was becoming prominent as a fashion model in Paris and across the Atlantic, in New York City. She posed for Dolce & Gabbana and French ELLE, among others. In that year, Bellucci made the transition to acting and began taking acting classes. The February 2001 Esquire Magazine's feature on Desire featured Ms. Bellucci on the cover and in an article on the five senses. In 2003, she was featured in Maxim.[6] In 2004, she topped AskMen's 100 Most Beautiful Women in the World annual list. Bellucci's modelling career is managed by Elite+ in NYC. She is considered an Italian sex symbol.[1][7][8] She is currently a face of a range of Dior Cosmetics. Bellucci is also signed to Storm Model Management in London.
Bellucci's film career began in the early 1990s. In 1992 she made her first appearance in a major English-language film as one of Dracula's brides in Bram Stoker's Dracula. She became known and popular with worldwide audiences following her roles in Malèna, Brotherhood of the Wolf and Irréversible, though is perhaps best known for her role as Persephone in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions followed by her portrayal of Mary Magdelene in The Passion of the Christ.
In a documentary about the film, The Big Question, she stated: "I am an agnostic, even though I respect and am interested in all religions. If there's something I believe in, it's a mysterious energy; the one that fills the oceans during tides, the one that unites nature and beings."[9]

In 2003, Bellucci starred in Tears of the Sun as a doctor in Nigeria being rescued by the U.S., and in 2005 in the fantasy film The Brothers Grimm as a beautiful evil queen. Her latest films are The Stone Council, directed by the Frenchman Guillaume Nicloux (2006) and Manuale d'amore 2 (2007) where she portrays a physiotherapist who is the object of the desire of her patient. She was supposed to be seen portraying Indian politician Sonia Gandhi in the biopic Sonia, originally planned for release in 2007 but now shelved. September 2007 saw the release of Shoot 'Em Up, where she plays a prostitute opposite Clive Owen. She dubbed her own voice for the French and Italian releases of the film.[10]

She filmed Le Deuxième souffle with Daniel Auteuil, Michel Blanc and Eric Cantona (2006).

Bellucci also voiced Kaileena in the video game Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, and the French voice of Cappy for the French version of the 2005 animated movie Robots.

In 2007, she appeared in Heartango, a movie for Intimissimi, with José Fidalgo and directed by Gabriele Muccino.

Film critics are quick to compare Monica Bellucci to previous Italian beauties, but she is her own brand of sultry icon. With roles as a topless vampire in Bram Stoker's Dracula, a taciturn war widow in Malèna (2000), a charmed courtesan in Le Pacte des Loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf) (2002), and a sci-fi vixen in the Matrix sequels (2003), Bellucci has proved to be a bold blend of earthy and ethereal, actress and star.

Born on September 30, 1968, Bellucci grew up in the small Italian village of Citta di Castello, where her father owned a trucking company. At 18, she enrolled at the University of Perugia with plans to study law. To pay her tuition, Bellucci started modeling. Two years later, she dropped out of school to relocate to Milan, where she signed with Elite Model Management. Besides strutting the cat walk in fashion shows, Bellucci appeared in international advertising campaigns for designers such as Dolce & Gabbana. With her modeling career in full swing, she began to take acting classes and made her screen debut in the television film Vita Coi Figli (Life With the Sons) in 1990.

After acting in several Italian features, Bellucci graced American screens for the first time as one of Dracula's (Gary Oldman) brides in Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), which also starred Keanu Reaves and Winona Ryder. She subsequently returned to Italy to appear in the heist film I Mitici (The Heroes) (1994) and the children's movie Palla di Neve (Snowball) (1995). As time passed, Bellucci grew increasingly frustrated with the failure of Italy's film industry to promote its projects abroad. She starred opposite Ben Kingsley and Dominique Sanda in the American television movie Joseph (1995), before looking for work in French films.

Bellucci made her French-language debut in 1996's award-winning romance L'Appartement (The Apartment). She earned a César nomination for her performance in the role, as well as began dating her co-star, French actor Vincent Cassel. The couple (who married a few years later) re-teamed onscreen immediately, portraying comically troubled lovers in the gender-bending romance Come Mi Vuoi (As You Want Me) (1996) and murderous bank robbers in Jan Kounen's infamous thriller Dobermann (1997).

In 2000, Bellucci returned to Hollywood to play Gene Hackman's estranged trophy wife in Under Suspicion. The film's director, Stephen Hopkins, had seen L'Appartement on a transatlantic flight and requested that she star in the thriller. That same year, the actress earned unprecedented worldwide acclaim for her performance as the title character in Malèna. Helmed by award-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore, the film featured Bellucci as a quiet young bride who is left alone in a small Sicilian town when her husband goes off to fight in World War II. Stunningly attractive, she struggles to keep her dignity as she is spurned by the female villagers and preyed upon by the men. Bellucci followed up Malèna's success with another international hit, Christophe Gans' genre hybrid Le Pacte des Loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf) (2002). The stylish cross between period piece and kung-fu flick (which also starred Cassel) was the fourth most successful film of its year in France. After conquering Europe, the film became an art house hit in the States and Bellucci received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress from the U.S. Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films.

The subject of numerous fan sites and men's magazine articles, Bellucci went on to star as the seductive Queen of the Nile in the comic book adaptation Astérix & Obélisk: Mission Cléopâtre. In 2001, she joined Dracula co-star Keanu Reeves in the cast of the highly anticipated follow-ups to The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003). Soon after, Bruce Willis personally chose Bellucci to play a humanitarian doctor whom he must save from war-torn Nigeria in Tears of the Sun, director Antoine Fuqua's follow-up to his hit Training Day (2001).

In 2004, Bellucci's momentum continued to build when she starred as Mary Magdalene in The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson's self-produced blockbuster retelling of the final 12 hours of Jesus Christ. In the wake of that film's success, Bellucci teamed with two other renowned directors, Terry Gilliam and Spike Lee, with roles in The Brothers Grimm and She Hate Me, respectively.

Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Claire Deschanel (born January 17, 1980) is an American actress, musician and singer. Deschanel made her film debut in 1999's Mumford and soon became known for memorable, deadpan supporting roles in films such as Almost Famous (2000), The New Guy (2002), Big Trouble (2002) and The Good Girl (2002). She then began playing lead roles, including All the Real Girls (2003), Elf (2003), Winter Passing (2005), Failure to Launch (2006), and Bridge to Terabithia (2007).

Personal Quotes

I love old music, old movies, screwball comedies, vintage clothes and basically I'm an old-fashioned gal.

I don't want to go to another rollercoaster ride of a movie. If I want that, I'll go to Magic Mountain. I'm really interested in the young directors that are doing different things in cinema. I think the movies people will hold onto are the Rushmore (1998)s and the Being John Malkovich (1999)s. Those are the kind of films I want to do; that's what I'm passionate about.

I'm blessed with a lot of energy and stamina. I can't stand sitting still. I went to a spa once with my mom and I was like, "Get me out of here!'"

I don't really like to go out very much. I'm not scandalous. I'm not, like, in this to be famous. I also find it so embarrassing when you read about people and it's like they were so trashed at Skybar and stumbling around. I don't want to be that person. That's just so embarrassing to have that written about you.

I'm the worst at picking what movies are going to do well. I have no idea. I'm really surprised if a movie I like does well.

For a while I was like, "Oh my God, anyone that would release an album as an actor is the biggest fool ever", but I happened to have sung all my life before I was an actor. Why are musicians allowed to become actors? No one ever gives them flack for that.

I can do the Chipmunk voice and impressions of Judy Garland, Debbie Reynolds and Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music (1965). I could probably do the whole Von Trapp family.

It's an addiction. I love clothes. I like to go down Melrose and look in all the windows and I go to different flea markets. I have lots of costumes. You never know when you're going to have to dress up like a milkmaid from the 1600s.

I was labeled a 'theatre type' in high school, which made it hard to fit in and feel part of things.

People say: "Oh yeah, jobs for the boys". I wish. You've got to fight even harder with a family like mine.

You have to keep reminding yourself it's not about money, because there is a lot of money to be made in this business if you're willing to do whatever. But that's not what I'm thinking about. I continue only to take movies because I love the script and because I really want to do it.

I don't think I'm very much like anyone else, really. I'm sure there are aspects of other actors that I share, but I don't see anybody else and go, "Damn, they stole my thing". I'm me, and I like that there are people who have an appreciation for that.

I don't want to be a babe. I don't want vanity to ever get in the way, because I think to maintain that, you have to be aware of yourself all the time, and that gets in the way of acting. My job's not to be the beautiful person. My job is to be the best actor I can be.

I always choose roles that are, you know, hopefully different from the last role. I don't wanna do the same thing over and over again because that's, well, first of all that's no fun.

It's a lot harder to do an ensemble because your energy is going in so many different places, and you have to cover everybody. You have to sort of split your attention.

[interview in "In Style" magazine, 9/06] The first album I ever got was "Like a Virgin". It was during the Iran Contra conflict-I thought she was saying, "Like a Persian".

Men's 1500m Freestyle: Mellouli gold shatters Hackett dream

(BEIJING, August 17) -- Australian Grant Hackett's bid for a record third consecutive Olympic title in the Men's 1500m Freestyle fell apart as Tunisian Oussama Mellouli proved faster than the Australian on Sunday, at the National Aquatics Center.

Mellouli's time for the gold medal of 14:40.84 was an African record.

Against the expectations of many, he stuck with the two fastest qualifiers, Hackett and Canadian Ryan Cochrane, throughout the race and began to pull away with 200m left.

The lead three swimmers Hackett, Cochrane and Mellouli were never near to threatening the world record at any stage of the race with Cochrane turning in first place, at the 800m mark, in 7:51.06.

It was at the 1100m mark that Mellouli made his move on the leader Hackett. He increased the pace to see if the Australian veteran and world record holder could go with him but Hackett was found wanting.

From that point on Mellouli pulled away and swam the last 50m in a 28.45 split to ensure Hackett couldn't mount a comeback.

Hackett tried hard to close the gap in the last 100m with a last 50m split of 27.9 but it was not enough and he had to settle for the silver medal in 14:41.53.

Hackett's recent form suggested he could have been able to respond to the challenge from Mellouli but he was unable go with the Tunisian when it was needed.

Cochrane qualified second-fastest for the final in an Americas record 14:40.84 and was with the leaders throughout the race, finishing with the bronze medal in 14:42.69.

 EURO TRIP
Thursday, July 31, 2008 (4:11 AM)

Summary

Four friends travel across Europe in search of Scott Thomas's German pen pal Mieke, whom he initially mistakes for a guy, when "he" is really a girl, but now realizes he has feelings for. They visit London, Paris, Amsterdam, Bratislava, Berlin, and Rome, getting into all manner of awkward and embarrassing situations along the way.

Expanded overview

EuroTrip begins with the main character Scott Thomas, known as Scotty, being dumped by his girlfriend Fiona at his high school graduation, in front of his parents and filmed on camcorder. Devastated, he e-mails the happenings to his German pen pal Mieke, which he mistakenly pronounces as "Mike" during which his friend, Cooper Harris, quips about all people on the Internet being gay men looking for sex.

They decide to go to a party to prove that Fiona won't stop him enjoying graduation, but they arrive to find that Fiona has been having sex with the lead singer of the college band, and are then treated to a performance of the song "Scotty Doesn't Know", in which every detail of the lewd affair is revealed with an accompanying explanation of why Scotty didn't know about it.

Drunk and angry, Scott arrives home and receives an e-mail reply from "Mike", who says "he" is sorry for all that has happened to Scott, and wants to arrange a meeting in order to make him feel better. Scott replies by telling Mieke "he" is a sick German freak, resonating on his friend Cooper's earlier comment warning him about Internet relationships.

The next day Scott's brother Bert explains to him that "Mieke" in German is not "Mike" as Scott thought, but actually a name similar to "Michelle" in the English language. "No, retardo. That's not "Mike", it's Mieke, a common German girl's name, similar to our Michelle". Realizing his mistake, and that he has feelings for her, he tries desperately to e-mail Mieke again, only to find she had blocked his address. He resolves to travel to Germany, to fix the situation and confront her face-to-face. He tells his plans to Cooper, after which they plan to travel to Germany together.

Unable to afford a passenger ticket, Scott and Cooper receive a discounted rate by traveling as couriers to London, England. In London, the two friends go to a pub called The Feisty Goat, believing that there is no drinking age in England, but realize too late it is a private pub for the members of the Manchester United football team fan club, and do not receive a warm welcome from the fans. The two teens say that they are a Manchester United fan club from Ohio, and after making up their own version of the football team's anthem (Scott sings Sheena Easton's song "9 to 5", and throws in a line praising Manchester United, which the hooligans find acceptable), the group welcomes them and they have a wild night of drinking. The next day, Scott and Cooper wake up on a double-decker bus, on their way to Paris for a Manchester United game.

After riding through the streets of France on the wrong side of the road, accompanied with a torrent of swearing and abuse being hurled by the hooligans, Scott and Cooper meet up with their friends in Paris, twins Jenny and Jamie. The gang decide to do "something fun", and end up while waiting in line for the Louvre. While in line, Scott gets into a robot dance showdown with a mime street performer and wins by kicking the mime in the groin. The four then go to a restaurant and Jenny and Jamie decide that they will also go to Berlin with Scott and Cooper to find Mieke. They agree on visiting other parts of Europe, since this would be the last summer the four of them will spend together before going off to different colleges.

After a long train trip, during which an overly enthusiastic Italian man attempts to grope them, the group ends up in the fictitious French town of Crans Sur Mer, where they visit a nude beach. To their dismay, it is full of naked men, also looking for nude girls. When Jenny arrives, they are chased down the beach by the desperate beach goers.

Later they arrive in Amsterdam, Netherlands (which is actually filmed in Prague) which leads to Cooper going to "Club Vandersexxx" (which is, unbeknownst to him, an especially brutal BDSM club), where he is seduced and later tortured. Scott and Jenny go to a café and eat what they believe to be hash brownies and proceed to "freak out." However, they learn much to their embarrassment that the brownies were not hash brownies and that the café was just an ordinary Dutch bakery. While Jamie is at a camera store seeking to have his prized Leica M7 camera cleaned, shop keeper Anna takes him to the alley behind the store to engage in oral sex. Unfortunately, Jamie, who is in charge of all of the money and passports, is robbed of everything by a mugger.

With no choice but to hitchhike to Berlin, they manage to get a truck driver to pull over. Unfortunately, he does not speak English and Scotty uses what little German he knows to communicate with him. He misunderstands the burly driver and believes they are indeed going to Berlin based on the fact that he said it numerous times—though he was actually trying to explain he was going "nowhere near Berlin" as he is wanted there for stabbing a woman and sexually assaulting a horse. Consequently they end up in Bratislava, Slovakia (filmed in Milovice) where they are horrified by the desolation of Eastern Europe.

They talk to a Slovak man and discover that there is no train network. They only have US$1.83 but due to the (exaggerated) exchange rate, they get the executive suite at a lavish Slovak hotel. Deciding to have "some more fun", they arrive at a nightclub where a remixed and translated version of the song "Scotty Doesn't Know" is playing in the background. The nightclub is apparently owned by the man Jenny met at the railway station in Paris, but she discovers that he is married and bisexual, and in a fit of depression, Jenny downs half a bottle of absinthe—becoming so intoxicated that she makes out with Jamie, her brother. The next morning, the same Slovak man drives them to Berlin.

After reaching Berlin, they find out that Mieke has gone on a boat tour for the summer and will only be reachable in Rome for a short time. In order to afford flight tickets, Jamie sells his precious Leica camera.

In Rome, the four go to Vatican City, since Mieke will be there before she leaves. Cooper manages to accidentally ring the bell of Saint Marco, before setting fire to a "pope hat" and throwing it onto the fireplace, which lights up white smoke in Vatican City, making everyone believe a new pope has been elected. Trying to escape, Scotty gets tangled in a golden curtain, before stumbling out on the balcony where he is believed to be the new pope (to what the real Pope, who is watching the event on TV from his house, responds "What the hell!?"). Spotting Mieke, he jumps down a banister to meet up with her. Although the Swiss Guards realize what was going on and attempt to stop them and severely punish them for their actions, the football hooligans from England return and thwart their attempts. Soon after, Scotty introduces himself to Mieke and they spend time having sex in a confessional before Mieke boards her boat. A man whom Jamie took on a tour of the Vatican turns out to be Arthur Frommer, author of the guidebook Jamie has memorized and he hires Jamie to tour every museum and cathedral in Europe. The other travelers finally get their passports and prepare to head home. On the return trip, Cooper and Jenny have sex in one of the aircraft's toilets.

At the end of the film, Scott moves to Oberlin College. Mieke surprises him when she says that she is his roommate, due to another misunderstanding about her name. The song "Scotty Doesn't Know" has apparently become so widespread and presumably popular that Cooper has it as his cell phone ringtone. The film ends with Scott and Mieke kissing.

Production

For the production of EuroTrip, Matt Damon shaved his head during filming of the movie. Also, when the main characters are boarding the train station in Paris, the scene was actually filmed in Prague's main railway station (Hlavní nádraží).
