 Poem I Wrote Yesterday
Sunday, April 12, 2009 (1:49 PM)
(I'm feeling content)
Where I'm From

I'm from dog leash,

From Ipana, Kent, and Burgie.

I'm from checkerboard hall,

Chaotic, crazy, happy.

I'm from rubber tree, from sweet pea,

From foggy summer.

I'm from horseback riding, pogo sticking,

From Eleanor, from Jean,

Conversation, food-consumption,

"I'm on the phone!", "Get off the phone!"

From Saturday, from Christmas,

From Baghdad-by-the-Bay,

Corn on the cob, and oh, that yummy spaghetti.

I'm from a city slicker/country bumpkin, one-to-two, male-to-female,

The younger you are, the taller you are, world.

Thursday, April 2, 2009 (4:41 PM)
(I'm feeling mischievous)
I got fed up with the whole encode/approve/delete cycle here at LiveVideo, so I now upload all my new vids to the Ark.  If you haven't been there, it's worth checking out.  Anyway, here are links to my two newest videos:

My Son, The Laugh Mimic

SF Meet-Up 2009

I hope all my diehard friends here at LV are doing well.  Peace.  Jim <3

 My First Love
Saturday, February 21, 2009 (9:29 PM)
(I'm feeling nostalgic)
Christine's (wheresthesea's) Valentine vlog inspired me to write the following story from my childhood.  I hope you enjoy it.

The first time I actually dated a girl was in 7th grade. We both played the cello in orchestra class. Her name was Melody. I took her to a movie one day, and on another occasion I took her bowling. She gave me a "love chain" made of gum wrappers, and I gave her a dozen packages of Sweet-Tarts (her favorite candy). It was so romantic. =)

In ninth grade, I transferred to a different school than hers, so we wrote love letters to each other (goofy ones). Finally, we got together again (we wanted to kiss each other for the first time), but it was painfully awkward for me for some reason, and it never happened. What finally killed the relationship was when I went to a really stupid movie with her parents and brother and her, and I just felt like I didn't belong there.

When we were both about 16, we happened to have one last (chance) meeting in a bus station elevator. We said a quick hello, and then she was out of my life forever. After that encounter, I never forgave myself for letting her slip away, because she had turned into an absolutely gorgeous girl.

Warning: Your City of Residence May Be Publicly Accessible!
Thursday, January 29, 2009 (11:17 AM)
(I'm feeling shocked)
Recently I did a search on LiveVideo by "people" (rather than by channel or video), and when I did that, I found on the left of my screen a "People Search" form, in which you can search by location, among other things. So I searched for LV members within a 20-mile radius of where I live, and several pages of icons popped up, including my own. Beneath my icon, it listed my city of residence, which shocked the heck out of me, because I only list my state on my profile, because I am very careful to keep my exact location private on the Internet. So I went into my LV account and looked at my "personal information", and didn't see any city, but I did see my zip code. Aha, I thought, that's how the info got in there. I tried to make the zip code blank, but it wouldn't allow such a change. So I then made it "00000", and it accepted it. Whew! Then I went to people search, and I no longer showed up in searches by my real zip code (or even by my fake one). I suggest that everyone do the same thing if you want to delete your city from being accessible by all.  I'm thinking of doing a video today, letting LVers know about this privacy issue, because I have a feeling a lot of people are going to want to get rid of that piece of info.

 My 58th
Tuesday, December 2, 2008 (1:01 PM)
(I'm feeling mellow)

Monday, December 8th is my birthday, but everyone's probably way too busy to do anything, what with the holidays coming and everything. It's totally okay, I understand. ;)

 Follow-Up: My Son's First Dance
Saturday, September 20, 2008 (4:02 PM)
(I'm feeling happy)

(If you didn't read my previous blog yet, it would probably be better to read it before this one.)

Well, my son had a great time last night!  He stayed for the full two hours, found lots of his friends there, danced so much he got all hot and sweaty, AND he says he wants to go to the next dance, too!  I was so happy to hear all of that!  :-D

There was a DJ there who took requests, and some of his favorite songs were played.  Most people didn't dance with a partner, they just danced with the whole group (which sure makes things easier at that age.)  Kids were singing along to the music, and sometimes all dancing in unison (like to one song that shouted out the dance steps).  There was a disco ball and flashing colored lights.  There were a lot of kids, including a lot his age, but it still wasn't too crowded.  And the music was loud but not deafening (you could still talk if you spoke loudly enough).  So I'm really pleased.  Lucas hasn't shown much interest in dancing, so I was afraid it would be boring to him.  =)

My Son's First Dance Ever Is Tonight! =)
Friday, September 19, 2008 (8:31 PM)
(I'm feeling excited)
Right now, as I type this, my son Lucas is at his first dance.  It's being hosted by the City Park and Rec. Dept., and it's exclusively for middle school kids who live in our town.  I'm so excited!  I hope he has fun.  He went there with one of his closest friends (another boy).  They are on the younger end of those in attendance.  His attitude seemed really good - he wasn't nervous, he just wanted to check it out.  There was no agenda going on in his mind,  like wanting to connect with a girl or something.  I'll post another blog when I find out from him how it went.  Before the dance, he and I played tennis right across the street, and when we were done, he walked to the gym where the dance was being held and met up with his friend.  He's really growing up!  I don't know if it's obvious, but I'm reliving my first dance when I see Lucas going to his.  Mine was somewhat of a disaster (I didn't dance at all), so I hope he does better than me, haha.  I'll let you know.  =)

Our Vacation in Washington Last Month
Saturday, September 6, 2008 (1:44 PM)
(I'm feeling chipper)
It's high time I told you about our August vacation trip.  My wife Karen, my son Lucas, and I took six days off and travelled to the Pacific Northwest region of the United States.  First we flew to the Seattle/Tacoma airport (the flight was delayed for a couple of hours), rented a car, and settled into our hotel in downtown Seattle.  The hotel was interesting.  It had odd-shaped bathroom fixtures, and the lobby looked a little like a fancy brothel (paintings of nudes, red walls, etc.).  The coolest thing was that on every floor, local photographers displayed their works on the doors of each room.  We stayed in Seattle for two days,  ate all of our meals in restaurants, and walked all over the city.  I took some cool photographs along the way.  One day I took Lucas to the Space Needle, and we went to the top.  That same day, we went on a bunch of amusement park rides.  I'm getting too old for some of those!  They either make me queasy or threaten to strain my neck.  (In my younger days, the scarier the rides were, the better.)  After our stay in Seattle, we drove north to Anacortes, WA, which is on one of the San Juan Islands (there's a bridge connecting it to the mainland).  There we spent a lot of time with my sister and her housemate, and also with my niece, her partner, and their three young children (one a newborn), who were down from Vancouver, BC.  We spent three days in Anacortes.  Some of the highlights were going to the county fair, seeing the movie "The Dark Knight" (the Joker was a bit scary for Lucas, but he was still glad he saw it), taking some beautiful hikes, sitting in a cafe listening to a singer/guitarist, and eating delicious Japanese and Thai food.  Unfortunately, I left my digital camera outside one of the restaurants we ate in, and when I went back to get it, it was gone.  So I lost most of my pictures from the trip.  :-(  That's why I'm making a blog about it instead of a video.  Anyway, when our stay was over, we drove our rental car back to the airport (and got stuck in such a bad traffic jam that we missed our flight).  Luckily, we were able to get on another flight two hours later.  (Karen tends to get very stressed out whenever there is some delay in our transportation.  She hates being confined to a plane or a car for long periods.  So that part wasn't pleasant, but the rest of the trip really was.)  Thanks for reading this travel blog, everyone.  Have a great day.  =)

Why Are So-Called "Bad Boys" Attractive To So Many Women?
Monday, September 1, 2008 (4:40 PM)
(I'm feeling curious)
I've been noticing (or is it my imagination?) that a lot of male LVidians who have higher than average machismo tend to be the most attractive to women around here. I'm generalizing, but guys like methodofmac, mrmercedesman, GregLions, TheMadHatter, etc., who sort of have a "bad boy" image, get a lot of female attention. What do I mean by bad boy image? Oh, maybe they smoke, drink or swear a lot, are aggressive or cocky, wear their sexuality on their sleeve, or generally try to run the show. I'm not saying that all of these traits can be applied to the men I mentioned above. I'm just trying to define my terms. Let me put it to you in the form of a question. Do nice guys finish last here on LV? I'm not complaining. I have about 500 friends, and feel well-loved by the community. I consider myself to be positive, supportive, friendly, and respectful to the people I meet on here. So there's a lot to be said for being nice. But the guys who get the most views and popularity seem to be kind of crass, rabble-rousing, or fast-talking/slow walking types. Does anyone agree with me, or am I totally off base? I realize there are all kinds of people here, with all kinds of values, so I'm only speaking in general terms. What do you all think?

 Friendship Freedom
Monday, July 21, 2008 (2:48 AM)
(I'm feeling pensive)
I like to think that here on LV, we can make friends and associate freely with whomever we choose.  Different nationalities, races, religions, ages, genders, sexual orientations, occupations, social classes, political affiliations, etc.  Right?  Then why do I get the feeling from some users that it's not okay for an older man to befriend, leave comments for, and/or participate in live chat with a teenage girl?

Now I totally understand being opposed to men making ANY kind of sexual overtures toward teens under 18.  That is just plain wrong.  But making innocent, friendly conversation?  I see nothing the matter with that.  People are people, and all adults were once teens.  I get the feeling sometimes that just being in a chat room with a teenage girl is enough to get you condemned by some.

What's your opinion?
