(I'm feeling pensive)
I guess some of you could tell I haven't been on the site for a while.... I've had a rough start to the year and haven't been able to get online at all for weeks at a time.  If anyone wants to know the details, drop me a text, comment, email, and I may tell you all the scary parts..  But the main thing is, I'm back online with a bit more regular access to a computer.  Now, what all have I missed?

 Just a little announcement
Sunday, December 7, 2008 (2:43 PM)
(I'm feeling hopeful)
Hey,

I wanted to see if I could get your quick help. I'm not sure if you've heard, but there's a movement of citizens inspired by the presidential campaign who are now submitting ideas for how they think the Obama Administration should change America. It's called "Ideas for Change in America."

I've submitted an idea and wanted to see if you could quickly vote for it. The title is: Require utilization of an extensive animal abuse database.. You can read and vote for the idea by clicking on the following link:

http://www.change.org/ideas/view/require_utilization_of_an_extensive_animal_abuse_database

The top 10 ideas are going to be presented to the Obama Administration on Inauguration Day and will be supported by a national lobbying campaign run by Change.org, MySpace, and more than a dozen leading nonprofits after the Inauguration. So each idea has a real chance at becoming policy.

Thanks for the support,

Beth Rogers

They Don't Call It Black Friday For Nothing
Friday, November 28, 2008 (8:47 PM)
(I'm feeling pessimistic)
I'm so sick of people.

Is it any wonder I'd rather be friends with the animals I work with than society in general?

A pregnant woman lost her baby, and a man lost his life this morning in a Long Island, NY WalMart when a crush of people stormed the entrance. The man was trampled and lay dying as the mob continued to shop even after several announcements were made over the store loudspeakers that the store was closing because of the tragedy.

In California, some psycho went into a Toy-R-Us and shot two people.

The Christmas season.

This is supposed to be all "Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men."

Yeah, right. It's obvious people couldn't give a rat's ass about anything but getting their dirty little fingers on the best deal of the day. If they can get their $400 big screen TV before anyone else does, why should they care if there's a man lying unconscious on the floor after literally being run over by 200 pairs of shoes?

Yeah, people make me sick.

Merry Chrismas, you assholes. Hope you're happy.

I have no tolerance for this
Monday, November 24, 2008 (7:18 PM)
(I'm feeling enraged)
I repeat, I have no tolerance for this.
This CAN'T go unpunished.  This story out of Los Angeles involves a 30-year assistant fire chief, his brutal attack against a 6-month-old german shepard puppy and the fact that he has yet to be arrested for this felony crime.
The owners of the puppy, Karley have created a website
justice4karley.com
where there is a petition link on the left of the page.
Please go to the site and sign the petition - we can't let this guy get away with murder.

Here's the full story from an L.A. newspaper:

L.A. County assistant fire chief under investigation in fatal beating of neighbor's dog
The 6-month-old shepherd mix is euthanized because of extensive injuries. The suspect, who has been placed on administrative leave, says he acted in self-defense.
By James Wagner
November 8, 2008
A Riverside teenager who left home to run an errand came home 20 minutes later to find paramedics, police and a firetruck outside his home. A neighbor took him to see the family dog, beaten and bleeding under a bush.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOR THE RECORD:

Dog beating: A headline on an article in Saturday's California section about the beating of a dog in Riverside said that a Los Angeles County fire official had been arrested in the case. The official, Assistant Fire Chief Glynn Johnson, was not arrested. He was placed on administrative leave from his job.

Online headline: The headline on an earlier version of this online article said Johnson was "held" in the beating; Johnson is not in custody. —

The female dog, a 6-month-old shepherd mix named Karley, allegedly was beaten by a neighbor, Los Angeles County Assistant Fire Chief Glynn Johnson, who was placed on administrative leave Friday while the incident is investigated.
Johnson reportedly told investigators that he had acted in self-defense.
Karley was euthanized a few hours after the incident, which occurred about 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Karley apparently had run across Johnson's yard and into the next yard.
Travis Staggs said he started walking the dog home from his yard when Johnson offered to take Karley home.
"Then something in his head snapped and he started beating the dog," Staggs said.
Johnson allegedly punched Karley with a closed fist about a dozen times and then beat her with an 11-inch rock, Staggs said, adding that he tried to stop Johnson but was pushed away.
Authorities received two calls from the 17000 block of Armintrout Drive: one from a woman who said her husband was attacked by a dog, and another from a man who said his neighbor had beaten a dog, Riverside County Sheriff's Sgt. David Barton said in a statement.
After Brandon Toole, 19, saw the injured dog, his 17-year-old sister, Heather, rushed the animal to a veterinarian, and later an animal intensive care unit.
Karley was euthanized because she was so badly injured, said Jeff Toole, the teenagers' father.
"I can't describe the way [Karley] looked and the pain she was in," Brandon Toole said.
Police said Johnson was taken to a hospital for wrist and thumb injuries.
Jeff Toole said the thumb puncture occurred when Johnson grabbed Karley's mouth and broke her jaw.
Johnson told his bosses about the incident, which he described as self-defense, said Los Angeles County Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman.
"The Los Angeles County Fire Department is deeply concerned with allegations regarding Assistant Chief Glynn Johnson's actions in the beating of his neighbor's dog," Freeman said in a statement.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is investigating. Malicious and intentional injuring of an animal is a felony.
The Toole family said Karley was a well-behaved dog.
"We are going to have to find another place to live," Jeff Toole said.

New Hartz Pet Treat Recall - Please Repost
Saturday, October 18, 2008 (8:34 PM)
The latest recall is by Hartz Mountain Corporation for Hartz Chicken Basted Chews. due to potential salmonella contamination.

Here’s the details;

The Hartz Mountain Corporation has voluntarily recalled a specific lot of its Hartz chicken-basted rawhide chips for dogs due to concerns that one or more bags within the lot are potentially contaminated with Salmonella.

The company announced the recall Friday, saying the two-pound plastic bags of chips with lot code JC23282, UPC number 3270096463 were distributed to a national retail customer it did not identify.

Hartz said the normal testing it conducts through an independent outside laboratory did not detect the presence of Salmonella in any of its rawhide products, but sample testing conducted by another laboratory did indicate the presence of the bacteria in a single bag of the chicken-basted rawhide chips.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and _ if there is cross-contamination caused by handling of the rawhide chips _ in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems.

Hartz is investigating the difference in test results and the potential source of the problem. It said there have been no reports of any animals or humans becoming ill. (Newsday)

Petition: A German Shepherd starved to death.. bring his killer to justice
Monday, September 29, 2008 (7:59 AM)
(I'm feeling frustrated)

Please sign petition for Shepp, starved to death on a chain

Complete news coverage of Shepp.

Warning Disturbing video

http://www.kztv10.com/SpecialProjects/305.htm     (Once at the page, click where it says "Special Projects" on the left of the page.)

JUSTICE for SHEPP

Shepp was a dog that was left for well over a month, to die with no food or water and chained to the extent that his collar was embedded in his skin. No one cared. The neighbors saw him suffering, yet nobody did anything until it was too late. Someone had placed food by him, but by then he was too weak to even get up. Someone contacted (KZTV) a news station that stands up for people and animals alike.

Shepp was taken to animal control were he was cared for by the vets and staff there, I know for a fact, for I was able to see him from behind the glass on Friday afternoon. The tech, vets and staff that were there with him, treating him with such compassion and care. Shepp passed away later that afternoon, which was devastating to the vets and staff.

His will to live was there, he wagged his tail and even tried to lift his head. However his body couldn't take it, due to the extreme neglect he endured for a month. He left this life. (KZTV Action 10 News) has set up a site for Shepp they will remain attentive to this story .

What is needed is signatures on a petition started out for justice.

In these cases of cruelty it is often difficult to catch and charge those responsible. For one month.Shepp had no food, little or no water. There are many that are in dire need of help and it is appalling how far this went on.

Our VOICE can make all the difference ..

Please take a moment, as hard as it is, please, view the video. It tears me apart, but to bear witness, we shall speak out for those that cannot.

Thank you my dear friends. And please REPOST Shepp's story far and wide. That justice may prevail and to those who stood by and did nothing you must be held accountable as well. For the guilt lies heavy upon you.

 Extremely Toxic Artificial Sweetener
Monday, September 29, 2008 (4:40 AM)
Not many people are aware of this...

Xylitol is deadly to Dogs !
You may be aware of the risks of Xylitol to dogs.
(an artificial sweetener used in diabetic foods, mints, chewing gum,
Sugar free pudding, etc.)

The risks of xylitol ingestion with dogs:- (as little
as 2 pieces of gum can cause death in a 20 lb dog).

Xylitol causes mass insulin release in dogs, leading to severe, acute hypoglycemia.
Symptoms in as little as 20 minutes, or as late as 12 hours: ataxia
(staggering gait), depression, lethargy, confusion, seizures & death.
Even if they survive the hypoglycemia, many dogs experience liver
failure and death 3-4 days later. There is no antidote or "cure." The
only option is to try and stay ahead of it by giving mass amounts of
Glucose to combat the effects of the Xylitol until it finally
metabolizes out of their system in 12-24 hours. Also, to check liver
enzymes a few days later to see if your dog is experiencing fatal
Liver failure - no real cure or treatment, just supportive care.

Xylitol tastes just like sugar, but with fewer calories, so there has
been an explosion of products in the US with Xylitol added.
Strawberries & Raspberries are natural sources of xylitol.
