In which Thers4Fears is lovin' her baby
Monday, April 28, 2008 (7:18 PM)
(I'm feeling excited)
So traditionally this end-of-show diary entry is done on LiveJournal, but I apparently don't remember the password anymore (shockingly, not my usual one!). Since Foolbook is the land of no privacy and I can't be bothered to hunt down my old paper journal, this shall have to do. At least the "Live" is consistent. Anyway excuses... (ps. this is for historical purposes and written for amusing myself in the future. It may be boring to others. Just a warning.)
All Shook Up goes up next week. It has been such an experience. Back in August I was talking to Steve when he said he knew what the spring musical would be. "It's called All Shook Up," he said. "It's all Elvis music. Now I know what you're thinking, 'Elvis...', but it's actually pretty good. The harmonies are amazing." I was still leery. Morally, I am against jukebox musicals. Compared to other pieces of theatre where composers toil over writing songs that propel their plots and drive their characters, taking existing music and shoving it into a plot seems almost disrespectful. And, as Steve predicted, I was not keen on it being Elvis' music. However, All Shook Up has grown on me. I still have no desire whatsoever to visit Graceland, but if an Elvis tune were to turn up on the oldies station I would be able to smile upon it with something like fondness. I will always prefer Elliot to the king though.
I am inexpressively proud of all the work the cast and crew have put into this show. Back in February I was giving Elliot tea bags and now he's taking the optional high riffs. Mitch the one-man-crew never missed a single Super Saturday. And David actually came to a few! All us dance retards are now doing the "hunka hunka burnin' love" dance in our sleep, the jail costumes are not as bad as I originally thought (still need work though), and Tanner should be put in the program as a swing. Not only is that kid off book as the Dennis understudy, but I'm pretty sure he's off book for the entire show. Coming out of Fully Committed I wasn't sure I could get more proud but I was wrong.
Not to mention, this show is/was damn FUN. One word: bus. With the possible exception of "Let Yourself Go", I thoroughly enjoy every single scene I'm in whether I'm hambone-ing, just standing and singing, or being a retard on the way to New York for meatballs. The energy keeps me going. <3 the 1950's!
Tim is the 4th director I have worked with in this high school and I am glad to have had the opportunity to do so. Every single director has had a different approach to their work (some better then others) and Tim thankfully is very conscious of the costumes. I have learned quite a bit from him. And he prefers quick changes to happen in the wings not on stage behind black sheets...
The culmination of a production always makes me a little sad, but this year I'm feeling particularly melancholy (which may explain why this entry is a tad on the early side). All Shook Up is my final show with the Academy Theatre. I have met so many amazing people, both already graduated and otherwise, over the course of my four years that I would not have meet by other means. Today we got an hour break for lunch between acts, so I went with a group of lovely people down to the library lawn where we had a picnic and fed the swans (and discovered a dildo in the bushes but that kind of ruins the idealistic picture). It was wicked fun and as I was sitting in a pile of mulch, it struck me how very sad I will be to graduate and possible never see these people again. But then again, there may be summer theatre with these guys in my future. Still, I'm not looking forward to singing "If I Can Dream" at the matinée.
Not too long ago I was struggling to decide my major next year for college. I eventually went with theatre because I was having such a positive experience here and I'm sure this is what I want to do with my life now. "Follow that dream where ever that dream may lead." I'm looking foreward to the future.

I'm so excited to perform our show for everyone next week! I just had such a lovely day of rehearsal that I felt the need to write this all out now instead of on Sunday after the last show.

I've got a lot of roustaboutin' to do so I'd better be off!
=)
