 What is a classic movie?
Sunday, August 24, 2008 (12:29 PM)
When you take a look at all the movies that are playing in the theaters today, have you stopped to wonder " Are any of these films going to be remembered as classic movies"? I guess what is considered a "classic movie" and what isn't is all a matter of taste. There are a wide range of so called classic movies. For example: "cult" "film noir" "Sci Fi" and "Mystery" ect. What do all of these have in common to be revered with that title "classic"? Is it age? is it popularity? or is it in the mind and heart of the viewer. Ed Wood, Jr directed 11 featured films three of my favorites are Glen or Glenda 1953, Bride of the Monster 1955 and Plan 9 from Outer Space 1959. I call these films classic because they made me laugh, made me re-act inside in such a way that I will never forget how bad they truly were. Ed Woods' movies have a rushed quality to them. You can tell he didn't do a lot of takes per scene. lol I watch his films repeatedly and will again and again because they are so bad they are good. Alfred Hitchcock is a direct opposite to Ed Wood and I call his films classic. Why? Almost every film he has made I have watch repeatedly. Spellbound 1945, Notorious 1946, Strangers on a Train 1951, Rear Window 1954 on and on and on. His films have made me laugh, given me chills and thrills. These two directors as different as night and day have earned a place in my mind and heart as classic film makers. The definition of classic movie? Terrific old movies from Hollywood's golden age? Timeless? A classic movie is whatever film you think is great and you will watch over and over until the day you die.
