Many cities celebrating July Fourth without a bang

What’s a July Fourth celebration without fireworks? Many cities across the United States will find out Saturday.

As municipalities grope for ways to shore up budgets, expensive pyrotechnics displays are becoming the latest victims of the economic downturn.

“They need to have things in the community like that to keep things going. So I’m sad to see it going,” said Seth Stolz, of Flint, Michigan, which will go without its traditional July Fourth explosions in the sky this year, according to CNN affiliate WJRT. He was accustomed to watching the show from his home.

The Greater Flint Arts Council puts on the show every year, and when the city and county said they couldn’t afford the $40,000 for the Flint Fireworks Festival, it was canceled last month.

19 states may have to shut down services

FACT one three colored, big bang firework = 399.00 - 599.00  Do the math  Someone has money

Number of civilians killed in Iraq jumps in June
Saturday, July 4, 2009 (8:33 AM)
(I'm feeling awake)
Reuters
July 1, 2009

The number of civilians killed in Iraq jumped to 373 in June, the Health Ministry said, up from a record low of 134 in May because of a spate of deadly bombings in Baghdad and northern Iraq.

The number of U.S. troops killed in combat fell marginally to 10, from 12 in May, according to website www.icasualties.org, which collates official data.

U.S. forces completed their withdrawal from Iraq’s cities on Tuesday, raising fears militants will try to exploit a security gap to step up attacks. U.S. commanders say Iraqi forces are up to the challenge and will be helped by U.S. troops trying to disrupt the movements of members of militant networks.

Do Police Always Lie, Or Does It Just Seem That Way?
Saturday, July 4, 2009 (8:22 AM)
(I'm feeling awake)

Maryland resident Shawn M. Leake was enjoying an evening drive near Hyattsville on May 25, 2008 when he caught the unwelcome sight of a police car behind him, its running lights on.

When he pulled over he was accosted by Prince George’s County Police Corporal Steven Jackson, who told him that he was following up on “inquiries” about Leake’s auto insurance. Jackson later claimed that he stopped Leake because the windows of his Cadillac were tinted.

Much about the ensuing conversation, which was captured by Jackson’s dashboard camera, remains unclear. A few minutes into the stop, after Jackson’s backup arrived, the corporal ordered Leake from the car. Puzzled and wary, Leake hesitated, asking why this would be necessary.

“Step out of the car now, or I’ll have you out of the car,” exclaimed Jackson.

“You yelling, but you have to give me a reason to step out of the car,” protested Leake, pointing out that he was trying to comply but his foot was caught on an obstruction.

When Leake finally exited the car, a shaved fraction of a split second transpired before Jackson slugged the taller motorist twice before bull-dogging him to the pavement. During this whole time, as the video clearly shows, Jackson did nothing to provoke the violence; he neither hit nor threatened the officer, nor did he assume a “fighting stance.”

After the two of them hit the ground off-camera, a hissing noise and choking can be heard suggesting that the tax-feeder had pepper-sprayed the driver. Jackson is heard accusing the motorist of hitting him and tackling him.

“You hit me in the f*****g lip,” grumbled Jackson petulantly.

“I did not hit you, man,” Leake replied in a remarkably composed voice. “You hit yourself when you tried to knock me out.”

“Dude, it’s all on tape,” countered Jackson. In his official report, Jackson stuck with his story that Leake “immediately took a combative stance and struck me with a closed fist uppercut to my face”; he then supposedly “continued to fight me and even tackled me to the ground into the next lane of oncoming traffic.”

On the strength of this account — since, as we all know, police never lie — Leake was originally charged with assaulting Jackson, as well as reckless conduct and failing to obey a “lawful” order. Those charges were dropped after the tape made it plain that it was Jackson who slugged the motorist repeatedly before tackling him “into the next lane of traffic.”

That’s right, dude: It was all on the tape.

One would think that Jackson would find himself confronting a perjury charge. One would be wrong, since police apparently have permission to perjure themselves about incidents involving violence.

“When an officer is involved in a violent incident, he’s going to use his best recollection when writing up the statement of charges,” insists Major Andy Ellis, a spokesliar for the Prince George’s County Police. “If there’s a discrepancy, that should be clarified in court.” And, presumably, if it’s the word of a perjurious police officer against that of a mere mundane, well, the “best recollection” of the former would prevail, correct?

Vince Canales, president of the local police union, insisted that the assault on Leake was justified because the video “clearly shows he was resisting arrest.”

Bear in mind that police are taught to treat any uncooperative gesture or behavior, however brief or innocuous, as “resisting arrest”–even displaying a facial expression considered “menacing” by the high-strung, fragile creatures who populate police agencies.

Leake has ample reason to be wary of the police: On one previous occasion he had been arrested for resisting arrest, a charge that was eventually dropped. That spurious, bootstrapped charge is often used to justify petty police harassment of people who haven’t actually done anything wrong.

The, ahem, heroic Officer Jackson, on the other hand, went on three months later to shoot and kill an unarmed man in Langley Park. In that incident, Jackson reported that he was trying to arrest 43-year-old Manuel de Jesus Espina for carrying an open container of alcohol, and Espina — like Leake — put up “violent resistance.”

Eyewitnesses insist that Espina put up no resistance as he was beaten with a baton, pepper-sprayed, and eventually shot by Jackson.

Jackson is on paid vacation (aka “administrative leave”) while the Espina case is under review. If he eventually faces criminal charges in that case, it will probably be a result of the fact that Jackson, at the time he murdered Espina, was moonlighting as a security guard, rather than acting in an official capacity

Cynthia McKinney: I’m in jail in Israel
Saturday, July 4, 2009 (8:17 AM)

July 3, 2009

Former Georgia congresswoman Cynthia McKinney revealed in a phone call posted online that she is in an Israeli prison with others who attempted to run a blockade to deliver supplies to Gaza.

McKinney and about 18 other activists in Israeli custody for the past three days will likely be released by Sunday, according to the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C.

Spokesman Jonathan Peled said preparations are being made to deport the activists. “It is taking slightly longer. Former congresswoman McKinney is not cooperating with the authorities” and refusing to sign a document acknowledging deportation, he said.

“It’ll take a couple more days before she is put on a plane and flown out of Israel,” Peled said.

UK Claims 100,000 H1N1 Cases a Day by August

More than 100,000 people could be diagnosed with swine flu every day by the end of August, the government said, announcing that the disease can no longer be contained in the UK.

A Commons statement by the health secretary, Andy Burnham, marks a watershed in the spread of the flu. No more schools will be closed, unless forced to by the lack of staff or if the pupils are especially vulnerable. Families and people in contact with those with flu will not be given preventative antiviral drugs.

The new policy of treatment for those with diagnosed illness, rather than containment, has already begun in the hotspots – chiefly London, Birmingham and Scotland.

Missouri National Guard Train to Kill “Militia Insurgents” (AKA Civilians who are upset) in Exercise
Friday, July 3, 2009 (11:01 PM)
(I'm feeling awake)

The Missouri National Guard is training to engage in combat with “militia” groups, according to the News Tribune.

“During the battalion’s annual training exercise, eight members of the Jefferson City-based unit, acting as a fictitious militant group, attempted to disrupt the battalion’s operations through attacks and harassment. The battalion’s other two units, the Kansas City-based 205th Area Support Medical Company, and the Springfieldbased 206th Area Support Medical Company, fended off the attacks while performing their medical duties,” the newspaper reported on June 30.

National Guard training in Missouri and South Dakota prepares soldiers to confront and kill “insurgent” Americans.

The article was written by Silas Allen, a journalist with the Pentagon. In 2006,the Pentagon officially announced it would declare psychological warfare on the American people by planting propaganda in the corporate media and the Allen article is a less than covert part of this process.

An earlier article written by Silas Allen, also posted on the News Tribune website, details a Missouri National Guard unit practicing basic convoy operations during a training exercise in the Black Hills of South Dakota on June 14. During the exercise, an “insurgent group” with “a reputation for harassing convoys with ambushes and improvised explosive devices,” attacks the Guard convoy. “The unit was also told to look out for civilians trying to approach the convoy on the battlefield. The civilians could be working with the insurgent group or could simply have a legitimate complaint,” Allen writes.

The two exercises serve as prime examples of an orchestrated attempt by the government to train soldiers to militarily confront domestic “militia” groups.

In April, a leaked DHS report on “rightwing extremism” said “right-wing militias” will recruit veterans returning from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. “DHS/I&A assesses that rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat,” the report claims. “These skills and knowledge have the potential to boost the capabilities of extremists — including lone wolves or small terrorist cells — to carry out violence.”

The corporate media hyped the supposed threat posed by “lone wolves” after white supremacist and probable government operative James von Brunn allegedly attacked the Holocaust museum in Washington. “The lone wolf is what concerns the Washington field office, what concerns the FBI the most,” John Perren, head of the counterterrorism branch at the FBI’s Washington field office, told the Associated Press.

After Von Brunn’s brutal attack, the corporate media shill and government disinfo operative Glenn Beck attempted to link 9/11 truth activists to the deranged accused killer. The corporate media has attempted to link truth activists and patriots to the Von Brunn incident and an earlier one in Pittsburgh.

A report produced by the Missouri State Police, entitled “The Modern Militia Movement,” specifically characterizes constitutionalists and Ron Paul supporters as domestic terrorists. “Red flags outlined in the document include political bumper stickers such as those for U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, talk of conspiracy theories such as the plan for a mega-highway from Canada to Mexico and possession of subversive literature,” the Missouri Information Analysis Center report states. t

In April, the Maryland National Guard was put on alert in anticipation of Tea Party protests, thus revealing that the government considers constitutional activists to be “insurgents” and “militants,” as characterized by the DHS and MIAC reports.

In March, the United States Army Reserve Command published a Force Protection Advisory recommending “situational awareness” and “mitigation measures” in response to End the Fed protests. On November 22, 2008, Alex Jones led a rally at the Federal Reserve Bank in Dallas Texas. The Dallas protest is specifically mentioned in the official Army document. Ron Paul’s brother was also in attendance. The event was monitored by the Pentagon.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has recommended merging the National Guard into the “Total Force” of the U.S. military. “The recommendations that are so disturbing are those involving the assimilation the National Guard and Reserves into the regular US military, under control and management of the DoD,” writes Carolyn Harris.

The DoD currently trains its employees to regard protest as a form of domestic terrorism. “It has come to our attention that the Department of Defense’s Annual Level I Antiterrorism (AT) Training for 2009 misinforms Department of Defense (DoD) personnel that certain First Amendment-protected activity may amount to ‘low level terrorism,’”complained the ACLU(GOP Paid Oppostion) last month.

The federalized National Guard has increasingly engaged in training exercises and drills designed to confront the American people. The exercises in Missouri and South Dakota reveal how the government is brainwashing troops to consider constitutionalists and patriots as “insurgents” who will attack military checkpoints and convoys.

In February, the National Guard conducted an “urban military” training mission in Arcadia, California. The Guard conducted a reconnaissance operation in the small town “to identify possible locations of the weapons dealer,” according to the Times Herald. The DHS, MIAC, the Virginia Fusion Center and others have characterized Second Amendment supporters and activists as potential terrorists.

National Guard troops in Ohio, New York, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Kentucky have deployed to conduct exercises against the American people, including taking over schools and jails and assuming police functions illegal under the Posse Comitatus Act. National Guard troops were used to control the public during the Boston Marathon, the Kentucky Derby, and during New Year celebrations in Times Square last year.

If you’d like to contact the Missouri National Guard about these training exercises aimed at patriots, constitutionalists, and supporters of the Second Amendment and the Constitution, call 1-800-GoGuard.

Guard units train for militia attacks

Silas Allen
Missouri News Tribune
Friday, July 3, 2009

CAMP CROWDER, Mo. — It isn’t easy being an insurgent in Neosho, Mo.

The long hours. The blistering heat. And, of course, constantly having to come up with new ways of harassing the Missouri National Guardsmen training in the area.

Such was the case for several members of the headquarters detachment of the 229th Multifunctional Medical Battalion.

During the battalion’s annual training exercise, eight members of the Jefferson City-based unit, acting as a fictitious militant group, attempted to disrupt the battalion’s operations through attacks and harassment. The battalion’s other two units, the Kansas City-based 205th Area Support Medical Company, and the Springfieldbased 206th Area Support Medical Company, fended off the attacks while performing their medical duties

Generally, the “militants” came in groups of two to four, said Capt. Joseph Schmitz, a member of the insurgent group. Because the training exercise was geared more toward the units’ medical duties, the attacks were rarely intense, and the militants gave up easily.

“If they shot at us at all, we were pretty happy with that,” he said.

Simulating an insurgent group involves a fair amount of acting. During a late-night scenario, Schmitz played a local townsperson with a minor shoulder injury. While waiting to be treated, Schmitz addressed everyone who passed him as “GI,” and spoke in broken English — phrases such as “You want I help, GI?” and “I am not fighter.”
