| | Fort Wayne Gazzette | | | Wednesday, October 1, 2008 (2:42 PM) (I'm feeling amused) | | Baby hawk tries craft on squirrelAnne GregoryThe Journal GazetteAdvertisement
Our south-side neighborhood is a big-bird garden.
Sure, we’ve got plenty of butterflies, thanks to all of the flowers and whatnots. We’ve got your cardinals, catbirds and nuthatches, thanks to lots of feeders, bird baths and overgrown hedges.
We also have hawks. Hungry young raptors. And they’re coming to a squirrel near you.
The neighborhood has mature trees – three-story oaks and maples so massive your hands wouldn’t meet if you tried to hug them. It also offers open ground in the boulevard. Perfect for swooping after rats, mice, bunnies and squirrels.
I like fuzzy-wuzzy bunnies as much as the next gardener, but this is circle-of-life stuff. You can’t have hawks without hawk food. And almost everything they eat is of the fuzzy-wuzzy and feathered-friend variety.
Many of Fort Wayne’s older neighborhoods are perfect for raising hawk fledglings. Each year, one couple weaves a flimsy looking stick nest high in one of our venerable old trees.
There are usually two babies, as there are this year, and they are not born to hunt.
I was deadheading flower boxes on the porch the other day, sipping a cup of hazelnut coffee when a flicking tail caught my eye.
Ooh, a cute little squirrel, I thought. Then I heard the scream as the young hawk dropped from the sky, his parents shouting encouragement from a neighbor’s roof.
A second later, the squirrel came out from behind a tree, fluffing its fur and no worse for wear. But there was no sign of the hawk.
A few seconds later, though, the squirrel levitated as the hawk came running toward him like a nose tackle on a mission.
The furry critter bounced around the hawk and then stopped to dig for something. The hawk rushed the squirrel, screeching. The squirrel hopped 2 feet and started digging again. You could almost hear it snicker.
The hawk, really angry now, spread its wings, got up on its tippy-toes – tippy-talons? – and lurched after Zippy the Squirrel. Think B-movie vampire. I laughed so hard I was snorting coffee.
Zippy sauntered over to a big old pine tree and ducked below its ground-sweeping boughs. Then he stopped, dug a little and flicked his tail in the direction of the hawk.
Game over.

| | GREAT MINDS AND ASTROLOGY | | | Saturday, July 26, 2008 (8:24 PM) (I'm feeling content) | | FAMOUS PEOPLE ON ASTROLOGY
If you ever feel embarrassed that you're into horoscopes or that you like astrology, and worry what others would think if they knew, that's understandable. But when you explore the history of looking to celestial forces for guidance, it may impress you to know that astrology has and continues to play an extraordinary role in the lives of powerful people throughout the ages.
That's right - the scandalous case of U.S. President Ronald Regan and his wife, Nancy, employing astrologer Jeane Dixon wasn't the isolated incident it seemed. Whether you look to the founding fathers (who it's said timed the signing of The Declaration of Independence and all future presidential inaugurations with their eyes to the sky), or Elvis (whose famous comeback concert was scheduled when astrological forces assured his great success), or Shakespeare (who made over 100 astrological references in his plays and sonnets), great minds have called on this ancient knowledge since the dawn of time.
Still feeling unnecessary shame? Then consider what others have said about looking to the stars:
"Astrology is one of the most ancient sciences, held in high esteem of old, by the wise and great. Formerly no prince would make war or peace, nor any general fight a battle, in short no important affair was undertaken without first consulting an astrologer."
- Benjamin Franklin (1751)
Okay, you may argue that he was just commenting on history, and didn't actually personally endorse anything. Well, ponder this:
"The cosmos is a vast living body of which we are still parts. The sun is a great heart whose tremors run through our smallest veins. The moon is a great nerve-center from which we quiver forever. Who knows the power that Saturn has over us, or Venus? But it is a vital power, rippling exquisitely through us all the time."
-D. H. Lawrence, 20th century British novelist and playwright
If you're saying to yourself, "Yeah, but scientists and astronomers don't believe in astrology," then check out what one of the greatest astronomers to ever live is quoted as saying:
"A most unfailing experience... of the excitement of sublunary (that is, human) natures by the conjunctions and aspects of the planets has instructed and compelled my unwilling belief."
- Johannes Kepler, 17th century German mathematician and astronomer
Now, if you're thinking, "Yeah, but he lived a super long time ago," then see what the most famous astronomer of modern times said:
"That we can now think of no mechanism for astrology is relevant but unconvincing. No mechanism was known, for example, for continental drift when it was proposed by Wegener. Nevertheless, we see that Wegener was right, and those who objected on the grounds of unavailable mechanism were wrong."
- Carl Sagan, 20th century astronomer and writer
How cool is that? Still not convinced as he was just being academic, and didn't have any personal success or results with it that you'd want? Then read this:
"Millionaires don't have astrologers, billionaires do."J.P. Morgan, turn of the 20th century financier and banker
I bet that one got your attention! Pretty amazing that a billionaire would give credit for his massive success to something so many rational (and broke) people dismiss as nothing more than mere superstition.
But the most amazing quote of them all...
"There will be signs in the Sun, the Moon and the stars."
-Jesus Christ, The Bible, Luke - 21:25
(I swear it's there - I checked it myself.)
So, see? By believing in the influence of the heavenly bodies above, you're among some of the greatest thinkers mankind has ever known. So be proud of your open-mindedness, your excellent judgment and the good company you keep. In short - give yourself a "high five" for being so enlightened... and quit worrying what anyone thinks of you.

| | NEVER JUDGE UNTIL YOU WALK IN SOMEONE'S SHOES!! | | | Thursday, July 24, 2008 (12:28 PM) (I'm feeling productive) | |
Some people!' snorted a man standing some distance behind
me in the long line at the grocery store.
'You would think the manager would pay attention and open another
line, 'said a woman.
I looked to the front of the line to see what the
hold up was and saw a well dressed, young woman, trying to get the
machine to accept her credit card.
No matter how many times she swiped
it, the machine kept rejecting it
'It's one of them welfare card things. Damn people need to
get a job like everyone else,' said the man standing behind me. The
young woman turned around to see who had made the comment. 'It
was me,' he said, pointing to himself.
The young lady's face began to change expression. Almost in
tears, she dropped the welfare card onto the counter and quickly
walked out of the store. Everyone in the checkout line watched as she
began running to her car. Never looking back, she got in and drove
away.
Several minutes later a young man walked into the store. He went
up to the cashier and asked if she had seen the woman. After
describing her, the cashier told him that she had run out of the
store, got into her car, and drove away.
'Why would she do that?' asked the man. Everyone in the line
looked around at the fellow who had made the statement. 'I made a
stupid comment about the welfare card she was using. Something I
shouldn't have said. I'm sorry,' said the man.
'Well, that's bad, real bad, in fact. Her brother was killed
in Afghanistan two years ago. He had three young children and she has
taken on that responsibility. She's twenty years old, single, and now
has three children to support,' he said in a very firm voice.
'I'm really truly sorry. I didn't know,' he replied,
shaking both his hands about.
The young man asked, 'Are these paid for?' pointing to the
shopping cart full of groceries. 'It wouldn't take her card,'
the clerk told him.
'Do you know where she lives?' asked the man who had made the
comment.
'Yes, she goes to our church.'
'Excuse me,' he said as he made his way to the front of the line.
He pulled out his wallet, took out his credit card and told the
cashier, 'Please use my card. PLEASE!' The clerk took his credit
card and began to ring up the young woman's groceries.
Hold on,' said the gentleman. He walked back to his shopping cart
and began loading his own groceries onto the belt to be included.
'Come on people. We got three kids to help raise!' he told everyone in
line.
Everyone began to place their groceries onto the fast moving
belt. A few customers began bagging the food and placing it into
separate carts. 'Go back and get two big turkeys,' yelled a
heavyset woman, as she looked at the man. 'NO,' yelled the man.
Everyone stopped dead in their tracks. The entire store became quiet
for several seconds. 'Four turkeys,' yelled the man. Everyone began
laughing and went back to work.
When all was said and done, the man paid a total of $1,646.57 for
the groceries. He then walked over to the side, pulled out his check
book, and began writing a check using the bags of dog food piled near
the front of the store for a writing surface. He turned around and
handed the check to the young man.
'She will need a freezer and a few other things as well,' he told the man.
The young man looked at the check and said, 'This is really very
generous of you.'
'No,' said the man. 'Her brother was the generous
one.'
Everyone in the store had been observing the odd commotion and
began to clap. And I drove home that day feeling very American.
We live in the Land of the free, because of the Brave!!!
Remember our Troops of Yesterday and Today!!!
A great example of why we should be kind and patient.
Kindness is the language the blind can see and the deaf can hear.
Never judge someone...until you have walked a mile in their
shoes.
MAY THIS READ BY MANY!!!
IT MAY OPEN A LOT OF EYES,
HOPEFULLY HEARTS,
AND KEEP SOME MOUTHS SHUT.
Peace Love and Wisdom to all!!!

| | Warning!! | | | Wednesday, July 16, 2008 (10:36 AM) (I'm feeling determined) | | Warning....!!!!
On Friday night they parked in a public parking area. As they drove away he noticed a sticker on the rear window of the car. When he took it off after they got home, it was a receipt for gas. Luckily his friend had told him not to stop as it could be someone waiting for them to get out of the car. Then this email was received:
'WARNING FROM POLICE ...BEWARE OF PAPER ON THE BACK WINDOW OF YOUR VEHICLE--NEW WAY TO DO CARJACKING (NOT A JOKE)'
Heads up everyone! ... Husbands, wives, kids, everyone!!! Please, keep this circulating... You walk across the parking lot, unlock your car and get inside. You start the engine and shift into Reverse. When you look into the rearview mirror to back out of your parking space, you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window. So, you shift into Park, unlock your doors, and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view. When you reach the back of your car, that is when the carjackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off. They practically mow you down as they speed off in your car.
And guess what, ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car. So now the carjacker has your car, your home address, your money, and your keys. Your home and your whole identity are now compromised!
BEWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED
If you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window, just drive away. Remove the paper later. And be thankful that you read this e-mail I hope you will forward this to friends and family, especially to women A purse contains all kinds of personal information and identification documents, and you certainly do NOT want this to fall into the wrong hands | | | 25 Views | 0 Thumbs Up | 0 Comments

| | Conqure Your Nightmares | | | Saturday, July 12, 2008 (8:43 AM) (I'm feeling cheerful) | | WAYS TO CONTROL YOUR DREAMS
When you were a child, having a nightmare was an excuse to snuggle up with your parents, get a warm glass of milk and let the adults battle the monsters. But as an adult, it can feel like you are waging the war to get a good night's sleep all on your own. And though the monsters are safely tucked away in a closet many years away, the pressure of deadlines, shifting relationships and even mortality can drive our sophisticated over-stimulated brains into breeding grounds for repetitive images that tear holes in our rest and rob us of peace of mind when we need it most.
Even more baffling is that our minds regurgitate images and sensations from a lifetime of experiences. So the ex you were oh-so-over is suddenly back in your face with accusations and the voice of Vincent Price. Your childhood teacher is asking you for your missing homework. And of course, you've arrived to the big work conference with everything you need - except your clothes!
If you can sleep through the car alarm down the street and the recycling trucks, but your own dreams wake you up in a cold sweat, here are some guidelines to leave the nightmares behind and sleep in a land where only good dreams come true.
Truth seeker
Accept that your nightmares contain emotional truth. No, you have not, yet, shown up to work without your clothes. But, do you feel safe at your workplace? Do you have allies that would defend you if you made a mistake or is it every person for himself? Remember, you are everyone in your dream. You are the scolding boss, you are your naked self, you are the co-workers whispering to each other. These are all representative of what you feel about yourself and how you think other people view you. Bare in mind, this is all about your perception in life. It is not the truth.
Childhood memories
Know that your perception is limited. How you view any situation is often an exaggerated distortion of childhood experiences. Did you feel prepared when you went to school? Did you feel scolded by adults? Childhood experiences - particularly vividly negative ones - can cloud our vision to what is happening in the present. And though you may be able to keep the old stuff at bay while you are fully clothed in your workplace, at night old thoughts and feelings creep out of their hiding places. But in the present, in the here and now, you are not a child getting through the school day. You are an adult with the facilities to take care of yourself and provide all that you need for success.
Master control
Did you know you can switch your nightmares into dreams? When you are lying in bed, keep a journal close by and write down all the things you did right today. Everything counts - driving to work safely, eating balanced meals, being kind to a stranger. See how well you are doing and literally rest in peace knowing that in the present, real world, you are well-prepared and doing lots of things right in your life. Then do a gratitude list for all the things you have in your life right down to the sheets you are sleeping in. By pausing to recognize all the abundance you have, you open yourself and go to sleep knowing you are on the right track in your life. Finally, think of a beautiful place you would like to visit and leave this image in your mind as you drift into the land of dreams.
Get physical
Try using your physiology to your advantage. Yes, the nightmares are "all in your head" but the rest of your body really wants to sleep. And your entire self, heart, head, limbs, even your eyebrows need to rest. So, if you wake up in the middle of the night use your body to your advantage. Take the pillows and put them where your feet are and sleep in the bed in the reverse position that you usually do. Put the comforter on the floor or camp out in the living room. Changing your physical location can kick your mind out of a repetitive pattern of disturbing images and into a new place of rest. Your mind and body are not separate - use one to heal the other.
Fear factor
Finally, remember that your nightmares are really only survival dreams. You survive every time you wake up. Your mind wants to explore what would happen if different fearful circumstances were to befall you. And each time you wake up, you have survived something within you that is afraid. You are victorious. Soon, your mind will relax knowing that you can handle whatever comes your way.
Dreams are a gift, so if you don't like the ones you are having, change them to be all that you want them to be. | | | 22 Views | 0 Thumbs Up | 0 Comments

| | NOSTRADAMUS........ | | | Tuesday, July 1, 2008 (8:48 AM) (I'm feeling creative) | | SEER OF SEERS
When one thinks of psychic phenomena, one name inevitably comes up. Nostradamus - one of history's most famous seers - made hundreds of predictions that not only span the centuries, but (many believe) have consistently come true. But who was the man behind the formidable name and what did he really see?
The Rose Pill
Before he began documenting his prophetic visions, Nostradamus was licensed in medicine and treated plague victims with his own unorthodox recipes. He concocted a special potion known as the Rose Pill (the ingredients of which have not survived) and he earned great repute as a healer. However, in the 1530's he suffered a tremendous personal tragedy as his wife and two children died from the plague. His medical practice consequently fell apart and he was scrutinized by the Inquisition concerning his relationship with Julius Cesar Scaliger - a philosopher and astrologer who was believed to have introduced Nostradamus to the art of prophecy.
Divine Presence
After the death of his family he traveled around Europe before returning to France and remarrying. It was during this time that he began to record his prophetic visions. It is believed (there was no physical description left behind) that Nostradamus used the technique of scrying by gazing into a bowl of water set in a brass tripod which he believed summoned a Divine Presence in Limbo who would offer him his fragmented visions.
He began by writing almanacs which became wildly popular and earned him a great deal of money and a reputation as a gifted seer. He then wrote his most famous work, Les Propheties de M. Michel Nostradamus (commonly known as The Prophecies or Centuries) which is still read to this day. This brought him to the attention of Catherine de Medici who was the Queen Consort to Henri the II of France. Believing in his psychic ability she named him Counselor and Physician in Ordinary to the King.
Nostradamus maintained celebrity status until his death in 1566 due to complications of gout and dropsy.
Famous Predictions
Some believe that he was able to foretell the Napoleonic wars, American Revolution, the rise and fall of Adolph Hitler, the assassinations of Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy as well as the September 11 terrorist attacks. Many even believe that the third antichrist (if not discovered already) is still at large. Most notably, Nostradamus predicted the world would end in the year 3797.
His quatrains are so popular and cryptic that during World War II, they were used by both the Axis and Allied Powers as propaganda tools each highlighting quatrains they felt showed their impending victory. We all know how that one ended.
Nostradamus debunked
As with many controversial issues such as these, Nostradamus' prophecies are vague and open to many different interpretations. It is important to remember that not only were his works vague in nature, but he used anagrams, poetry and at least four different languages to disguise their true meaning - that's a whole lot of code to debunk! Furthermore, Nostradamus himself was a terrible astrologer (he required clients to give him their natal charts as he was known for making mistakes such as putting the planets in the wrong sign) and his healing powers have been called into question - why didn't his Rose pill work on his family?
A popular urban myth states that during the French Revolution his body was dug up and contained a medallion that had the exact date of his exhumation. Whatever you believe, Nostradamus has had a profound impact on pop culture and history and remains a distinguished member of the psychic hall of fame to this day.

| | Green Connections! | | | Sunday, June 29, 2008 (7:54 PM) (I'm feeling hopeful) | | By now, almost everyone is aware of the seriousness of the climate changes that are currently evolving around us. Whether your compassion is extended to polar bears dying due to the warming Arctic waters, or for the thousands of people whose lives were upended from the wrath of Hurricane Katrina, or maybe you are beginning to notice how expensive basic food supplies are becoming, there is no denying that a change has begun.
What does this have to do with psychic awareness and personal growth? Almost everything! It is becoming increasingly obvious that every step we take, every choice we make, is interconnected in as grand an experience as life itself. The adage which states that a butterfly flapping its wings in Peru affects the weather in New York, has never been more aptly applied.
Have you ever walked into a strange place and "felt" the energy it contained, almost as if "something" was vibrating around you in unseen and unknown ways, in some other dimension of life. This is an example of how one action feeds into another action and creates the chain of events some call "the web of life." Just as heightening your awareness of psychic connections to people, places and animals can have a profound impact on the course you choose for your life, connecting to the basic aspects of your existence can have equally, and often surpassing, results.
For instance, when we buy a bottle of water at the store, we rarely think of the petrochemicals that go into the creation of that bottle, or that 2.5 million of such containers are consumed in the United States every hour. Each bottle has a disintegration rate of more than 400 years! They are hardly biodegradable but they are reusable and, usually, unnecessary. Did you know that those "convenient" disposable diapers will outlive the baby who wears them by more than 500 years! There is a powerful connection between what you do or what you consume and the spiritual energy that you create.
You can reduce the amount of CO2 (greenhouse gas) by almost 5,000 pounds a year just by washing your clothes in cold water instead of hot and letting them dry in the sun during warmer months. Add using compact fluorescent bulbs instead of traditional incandescent light bulbs and you limit your carbon output by another 1,000 pounds! Remove meat from your menu at least one day a week and you can decrease your carbon "footprint" by almost another 2500 pounds a year!
While we, in the United States, live in the most consumer driven environment in the world, we also have the power to change the direction we and many other nations and cultures choose to take. We have set the precedent for what is perceived to be one of the highest standards of living in the world, but we also have a responsibility to future generations of life to connect with the things that truly endure.
Just like doing a small (yet kind!) action for a stranger can brighten your day or even your week, doing things for our planet and all who inhabit her can increase your psychic connection to one and all. Allow yourself to "feel" the powerful interconnected energy forces of the life around you. As you feed the "web of life," you, in turn, are fed. Everything, everyone, everywhere really is connected!

| | I BELIEVE............ | | | Saturday, June 28, 2008 (10:05 PM) (I'm feeling accomplished) | |
I Believe --
A birth certificate shows that we were born; a death certificate shows that
we died; pictures show that we lived! Have a seat . . . Relax....And read
this slowly.
I believe - That just because two people argue, it doesn't mean they don't
love each other. And just because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do.
I believe - That we don't have to change friends if we understand that
friends change.
I believe - That no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt you
every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.
I believe - That true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest
distance. Same goes for true love.
I believe - That you can do something in an instant that will give you
heartache for life.
I believe - That it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to
be.
I believe - That you should always leave loved ones with l oving words. It
may be the last time you see them.
I believe - That you can keep going long after you think you can't.
I believe - That we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.
I believe - That either you control your attitude or it controls you.
I believe - That heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it
needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.
I believe - That money is a lousy way of keeping score.
I believe - That sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're
down will be the ones to help you get back up.
I believe - That sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but
that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.
I believe - That maturity has more to do with what types of experiences
you've had and what you've learned from them and less to do with how many
birthdays you've celebrated.
I believe - That it isn't always enough t o be forgiven by others. Sometimes
you have to learn to forgive yourself.
I believe - That no matter how bad your heart is broken, the world doesn't
stop for your grief.
I believe - That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we
are, but we are responsible for who we become.
I believe - Two people can look at the exact same thing and see something
totally different.
I believe - That your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who
don't even know you.
I believe - That even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend
cries out to you - you will find the strength to help.
I believe - That credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human
being.
I believe - That the people you care about most in life are taken from you
too soon.
I believe - The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of
everything; they just make the best of everyth in g they have.
I believe - That you should send this to all of the people that you believe
in.
I just did.

| | SOME OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES COME WITH A RISK.... | | | Saturday, June 14, 2008 (3:44 PM) (I'm feeling cheerful) | |
Local hospital officials encourage residents and tourists to enjoy the outdoors, but to do so safely. This time of year, the emergency room is a popular destination for patients with stingray wounds, jellyfish stings, oyster shell cuts, snake bites, heat-related illnesses and sunburn.
Here's what you need to watch out for:
STINGRAYS
For the most part, stingrays keep to themselves. But if a swimmer startles one, the animal will defend itself, as its name implies, by using its barb.
The best way to avoid getting stung? Wear water shoes and do the "stingray shuffle." Just shuttle your feet along the ocean floor.
"You'll bump into the side of it and it will swim away," said Dr. Robert Clodfelter,
medical director of the emergency room at Hilton Head Hospital. "If you step on top of it, it will barb you."
That barb looks like a tail, but it is actually the animal's spine and is coated with venom.
Clodfelter said stingrays don't inject venom when they sting, but often a piece of the barb breaks off and sticks in the wound. It must be removed or infection is likely, he said. He soothes the pain by soaking the wound in warm water.
While painful, the sting is not normally fatal, Clodfelter said.
In 2006, "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin was killed when a stingray barb pierced his heart, an incident Clodfelter calls extremely rare. The ray that killed Irwin was much larger than those found in Hilton Head waters, the doctor said.
Three types of stingrays are most common here: the Atlantic, bluntnose and southern stingray. They have a wingspan of 6 to 12 inches and are the color of milk chocolate.
Depending on the type, their tails range in color from yellow to brown.
"Stingrays are very common in our surf and in our tidal creeks," said Pearse Webster, a wildlife biologist with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources. "I've seen them in just a few inches of water."
JELLYFISH STINGS
Later in the summer, jellyfish stings are common. They cause painful rashes and allergic reactions.
"With jellyfish, sometimes tentacles will stick to the skin after the sting," Clodfelter said. "It's important to safely get the rest of the tentacles off the skin without having them rupture."
He suggests victims rinse the tentacles off with saltwater or remove them by applying shaving cream and scraping them off with a credit card. White vinegar can also be used to soothe the wound. You should then seek medical attention.
OYSTER SHELL CUTS
Oyster shells are sharp and can cause soft tissue lacerations. Fragments of the shells easily infect the wound. People who get a significant cut should seek immediate medical attention.
SNAKE BITES
A majority of snakebites treated at the hospital involve non-venomous snakes. The most common venomous snake bites are from copperheads. Those bites can cause tissue destruction or swelling to the point it impairs the viability of fingers or toes, Clodfelter said.
Treatment involves cleaning the wound, administering fluids, pain medication and, if necessary, an antivenin. The antivenin counteracts the effect of the venom, saves tissue and lessens pain and swelling.
HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES
If you engage in outdoor physical activity on warm days and don't drink enough water, you're at risk of heat-related
illnesses:
• Heat cramps are pains and spasms in abdominal or leg muscles. It is generally thought the loss of water and salt from heavy sweating causes the cramps, according to the American Red Cross.
• Heat exhaustion causes decreased blood flow to vital organs, resulting in a form of shock. It happens when sweat does not evaporate as it should and the body does not cool properly. Symptoms include flushed skin, heavy sweating, headache, nausea or vomiting.
• Heat stroke is life-threatening. The body loses its ability to regulate its temperature. In some cases, that temperature may rise to more than 105 degrees, causing brain damage or death if the body isn't cooled quickly. Symptoms include red and dry skin, loss of consciousness, rapid pulse and shallow breathing.
To prevent these illnesses, Clodfelter urges residents to drink lots of water, wear cool clothing and avoid strenuous activity from late morning to mid-afternoon, when the sun is hottest. If you get cramps or feel faint, go to a cool place and drink fluids. If symptoms don't improve, seek medical attention.
As for sunburn, it can range from slight discomfort to severe blistering. It's the easiest summer risk to avoid.
"Just wear your sunscreen," Clodfelter said. "The higher (the SPF)the better, and reapply it."
