 A THOUGHTFUL HUSBAND
Thursday, May 29, 2008 (6:17 PM)
It is important for men to remember that, as women grow older, it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are over-sensitive, and there's nothing worse than an over-sensitive woman.

My name is Jim. Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife, Peggy. When I retired a few years ago, it became necessary for Peggy to get a full-time job along with her part-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed.

Shortly after she started working, I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from the golf club about the same time she gets home from work and although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner! I don't yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch in the Men's Grill at the club so eating out twice is not reasonable. I'm ready for some home-cooked grub when I hit that door.

She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. But now it's not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner. I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won't clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed.

Another symptom of aging is complaining, I think. For example she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But, boys, we take 'em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two or even three days. That way she won't have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn't hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think tact is one of my strong points.

When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She had to take a break when she was only half finished mowing the lawn. I try not to make a scene. I'm a fair man. I tell her to fix
herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me too.

I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Peggy. I'm not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will even find it impossible! Nobody knows
better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, guys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other.

Signed,

Jim

EDITOR'S NOTE:

Jim died suddenly on May 27 of a perforated rectum. The police report says he was found with a Calloway extra long 50-inch Big Bertha Driver II golf club jammed up his rear end, with barely 5 inches of grip showing and a sledge hammer lying nearby. His wife Peggy was arrested and charged with murder. The all-woman jury took only 15 minutes to find her “Not Guilty,” accepting her defense that Jim somehow, without looking, accidentally sat down on his golf club.

 A Heartwarming Story
Tuesday, March 18, 2008 (3:13 PM)
(I'm feeling mellow)
Thanks to LifeJourneyGuy (Pete) for this:

In 1986, Dan Harrison was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from
Northwestern University.

On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Dan approached it very carefully.

He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it.

As carefully and as gently as he could, Dan worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot.

The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments.

Dan stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away.

Dan never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Dan was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenage son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Dan and his son, Dan Jr. ,Were standing.

The large bull elephant stared at Dan, lifted its front foot off the ground, and then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.

Remembering the 1986
encounter, Dan couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant. He
summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the
enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder.

The elephant
trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Dan's legs

and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly.

..................Probably wasn't the same elephant.

 WARNING - PLEASE READ!

Over the counter medicines can be dangerous!

A  19 year old University of Oklahoma honor student, and Music major, died yesterday after taking acetaminophen (an ingredient in Tylenol, and other over the counter pain medications) for 3 weeks.

She took the medication for a toothache, but exceeded the recommended dosage by only one pill per day.  The bottle warns not to take more than 8 in 24 hrs., but she had been taking 9 a day.  She died of liver failure.

It is not known why she had not sought medical treatment for her discomfort, but this young woman made a fatal mistake in not doing so.

Please be aware of the potential dangers of this common over the counter drug, and use it with care!

IS YOUR HANDBAG MAKING YOU SICK?
Monday, February 25, 2008 (10:50 AM)
(I'm feeling shocked)

HANDBAGS...

Have you ever noticed gals who sit their handbags on public toilet floors, then go directly to their dining tables and set it on the table? Happens a lot!

It's not always the 'restaurant food' that causes stomach distress. Sometimes "what you don't know will hurt you"!

Read on...

Mom got so upset when guests came in the door and plopped their handbags down on the counter where she was cooking or setting up food. She always said that handbags are really dirty, because of where they have been.

It's something just about every woman carries with them. While we may know what's inside our handbags, do you have any idea what's on the outside? Women carry handbags everywhere; from the office to public toilets to the floor of the car. Most women won't be caught without their handbags, but did you ever stop to think about where your handbag goes during the day.

"I drive a school bus, so my handbag has been on the floor of the bus a lot," says one woman. "On the floor of my car, and in toilets."

"I put my handbag in grocery shopping carts and on the floor of the toilet," says another woman "and of course in my home which should be clean."

We decided to find out if handbags harbor a lot of bacteria. We learned how to test them at Nelson Laboratories in Salt Lake, and then we set out to test the average woman's handbag.

Most women told us they didn't stop to think about what was on the bottom of their handbag. Most said at home they usually set their handbags on top of kitchen tables and counters where food is prepared.

Most of the ladies we talked to told us they wouldn't be surprised if their handbags were at least a little bit dirty.

It turns out handbags are so surprisingly dirty, even the microbiologist who tested them was shocked.

Microbiologist Amy Karen of Nelson Labs says nearly allof the handbags tested were not only high in bacteria, but high in harmful kinds of bacteria. Pseudomonas can cause eye infections, staphylococcus aurous can cause serious skin infections, and salmonella and e-coli found on the handbags could make people very sick.

In one sampling, four of five handbags tested positive for salmonella, and that's not the worst of it. "There is fecal contamination on the handbags" says Amy. Leather or vinyl handbags tended to be cleaner than cloth handbags, and lifestyle seemed to play a role. People with kids tended to have dirtier handbags than those without, with one exception.
The handbag of one single woman who frequented nightclubs had one of the worst contaminations of all. "Some type of feces, or possibly vomit" says Amy.

So the moral of this story is that your handbag won't kill you, but it does have the potential to make you very sick if you keep it on places where you eat.

Use hooks to hang your handbag at home and in toilets, and don't put it on your desk, a restaurant table, or on your kitchen countertop.

Experts say you should think of your handbag the same way you would a pair of shoes. "If you think about putting a pair of shoes onto your countertops, that's the same thing you're doing when you put your handbag on the countertops" - Your handbag has gone whereindividuals before you have sneezed, coughed, spat, urinated, emptied bowels, etc!
Do you really want to bring that home with you?

The microbiologists at Nelson also said cleaning a handbag will help. Wash cloth handbags and use leather cleaner to clean the bottom of leather handbags.

THIS IS WORTH SHARING!!!

AND MEN PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO YOUR WIVES, GIRLFRIENDS AND DAUGHTERS!

 CHANGING MY TUNE
Monday, February 25, 2008 (4:59 AM)
(I'm feeling optimistic)

After struggling with the new Visa system for a week, now, I'm feeling more optimistic about it, and I'll tell you why.

I guess it's natural to be a bit frustrated with a radical change...we become comfortable with the status quo, don't we (much like our ambivilant feelings about the changes taking place here at LV), and when you're forced to adopt an operating system that is unfamiliar, and I do mean UNFAMILIAR, you get a double whammy.

I bought an HP Pavillion equipped with Windows Vista, brought it home, hooked it up, and searched for at least 5 minutes before I found the power button on this contraption, but soon discovered that was nothing compared to finding a way to turn it off!  There is no "start" icon, btw, in its place is a round soccer ball colored like the windows logo.  Well, even I quickly decided it must be the "start" button because it's located in the exact same place, but when I clicked on it...right or left...I could find no "turn off computer" or "restart"... it just wasn't there.   What I saw was a double list... one of programs, and one of management tools or functions, but no apparent way to turn off, or reboot, the computer. Finally, I discovered a very tiny arrow > that opened a submenu listing this option.   Whew!  And this was only the start of it all, with nothing in its proper place, or nonexistant, and, of course many of my old familiar programs were gone, and most too old to be supported by Vista, anyway.

I could probably write a book about the differences between Vista and Windows XP, but end this with my feelings of hope and optimism.  I'm finding new features that I love!  Windows sidebar is a feature to keep your "gadgets" close at hand, and I've chosen the news and weather feature with this information showing and updating continually, seen at a glance.
Another great feature is the tiny preview window that pops up when you hover the cursor over an open window icon on the menu bar.  If you have several windows open at once, such as your mail box, browsers, ect., you can check new activity without actually opening the window.  Neat!

I think I like Vista.
