 1981 Yamaha XS400 "Bobber" [Update 2]
Saturday, September 20, 2008 (9:34 AM)
(I'm feeling thirsty)
What was a complete bike 2 weeks ago is now a pile of parts in the yard. Got the engine ripped out. Just gotta get the red of the wiring ripped off. Waiting for my mom and her boyfriend to get home so I can borrow the truck to take it over to Murph for the welding.

Once this is done its time for a new rear tire and then I can get the struts put on. Reason I have to wait is because the rear tire thats on it now is squared off and odds are a new tire is going to sit a bit higher then the current. So im waiting on getting the tire before finalizing the distance between the seat and the tire.

I good portion of what was on this bike is probably end up for sale on ebay. I dont want any of the stock gauges, so those are going bye bye. The shocks, the tank, the front forks (after I get the Springer front end), the stock seat, and the lights.

You know anyone with the same bike as this looking for parts let them know to get ahold of me and ill see what i can do.

 1981 Yamaha XS400 "Bobber" [Update]
Wednesday, September 17, 2008 (4:11 PM)
(I'm feeling sick)
Alrighty, so I got ahold Murph (ex's uncle) about doing the welding. He said he was good with doing it Saturday so everything is lined up. I dropped the swingarm and tank a few mintues ago. Tomorrow ill get the front end and whatever else I can get off and Friday night I pull the motor before going over to hang out with Kevin, Corey, & Wendy.

Been looking at parts for the bike over the last few days. Getting some ideas in my head and finding things for the previous ideas in my head. Trying to decide if I want to go with forward controls or not. If I do then I can run the clutch cable to that for my left foot... if not then ill just attach it to the hand shifter.

Another problem is the front end. If I get the Springer front end im probably going to have to find another front rim. Only way I can see using the one I got is to get a new hub or making a bracket to hold the drum in place while the tire is moving.

I pulled the starter a few days ago to get it tested and its working. It is so my guess is the starter switch assembly is fucked. A new one is $82. I prefer the idea of the kickstart myself but if I have an electric starter stock I might aswell keep it and have it useable for those lazy leg days. I didnt realize when I was pulling the starter out that there was a gear attached on the inside of the casing that falls, so now I have to pull the side cover off and put it back on... which means new gasket.

 1981 Yamaha XS400 "Bobber"
Wednesday, September 17, 2008 (4:10 PM)
(I'm feeling excited)
So the work started on the conversion to bobber. I eliminated the shocks and will be replacing them with a solid strut making it a hard tail. The shocks measure 12.5" from bolt to bolt and the new distance I have is 9". Seems like its lowered alot more then that though.

I found a site online that makes some pretty nice Springer front ends that I plan to get for $345+shipping. Got the dust cover that I lost already ordered. Should be here sometime this week so I can get the front end put back together for now.

Tested the starter earlier and its working fine, so its the starter switch assembly thats fucked. Replacement for that is $82. Still have to get a rear tire for the bike before I can finalize the distance for the struts. My ex's uncle told me he would do the welding a while back, need to get ahold of him to see if he'll still do it.

I plan to have a suicide shifter on this aswell. Just have to decide if im going to put on forward controls or not. If I do then I can have the clutch there. If not im just going to attach the clutch to the shifter.

The bike will have red neons under it plus I found a set of spark plug caps that are see-through and glow red. It seems like whats going to take the longest is getting the money and parts. Once I get the tires and struts on ill start riding it from time to time and doing the finalizing mods. Still need to buy a set of ape hangers for this. I want them at shoulder level. Will have to get that measurement tomorrow, probably about 16"-18".

Im pretty excited about this project. I dont know if ill be able to sell it when im done. All this work and im getting attached to it. lol
